I'll keep with the snow theme. Driving over the La Sal Mountains between Moab, UT and Gateway, CO (John Brown Canyon) last weekend. Probably one of the last weekends it will be passable this season. Interesting signs along the way. I like the one about winter maintenance. I never saw the start of winter maintenance.

No action...but after hunting on the mountain most of the day and then having the ceiling come down with wet snow until I had to pull the compass out of my hunting vest to get my bearings(!) I was super happy to get back to my SpressoWagon...
Ya know, they have these GPS thingys that leave breadcrumbs... just sayin'.

Fair enough. Just bustin ya chops.
My problem with a compass is that unless you go in a straight line, it becomes hard to judge the bearing back to the vehicle. I may generally know that it is south of me, but if' I've circled to the west, how far east do I have to go?

Now we are starting to talk orienteering, which is a great class to take for anyone who ventures into the back country. Lots of fun too. For those who do not want to take a class, if you carry a small notepad and simply make some notes while you are walking it works well. Counting steps with directional compass readings and make note of each in your notepad. You don't even need exact step counts, just ball park. If you take good enough notes you can make it back to your truck without having to follow the same path back based on your measurements.

Everyone should go pick up a compass (Brunton or Silva are good bets. I have a Silva Ranger. it's cheap and very accurate) and a USGS 7.5 Minute quad and a cheap book on orienteering and go learn it. It's a great skill to have and a lot of fun when you can pinpoint yourself on a map without a GPS.

Drove 3000 miles in 8 days...Phoenix to NW Montana & back. LC performed flawlessly, A-TRAC got a workout coming up his driveway, got to use my heated seats, loved every second of it!!!

In north Namibia! Trip July 2010!
During last half of the trip I had to carry my 2nd spare on Roof due to ripping it out from underneath when driving over a stone that was too high!
Glad I did not catch the diff! Fortunately front diff was covered by a the bash plate, which had a huge dent!
