The Gulches claims a winch...

I had my winch burn the motor at Tellico (OTMT) and tore into it this week (the Warn M12000 is fully rebuildable ). The motor itself was looking good, but as I took it apart I noticed that the brushes, stator, etc are ALL packed into the motor housing with a nice coffin of Gulches silt.

I really really hate that stuff!

New motor is on the way. My winch was only working because the motor was strong enough to break free of the rust that was binding it and then pulverizing this silt while running. Poor thing never had a chance!

The upside is I completely rebuilt, cleaned, and lubed the entire winch so when my replacement motor comes it should be as good as new!

that crap was incredible...like dirt soup. Amazing how fine it was and how it seeped into everything. I still get some out of the radiator when I clean it.

Hmmm... Good to know about the resiliency / fortitude of the M12000.

Seems appropriate an overbuilt / engineered winch that refuses to quit is on a vehicle with the same traits.

Like most everything else, you get what you pay for!

Yeah, it is very serviceable...I could even do that in the dirt if i had to it was so easy.

The only tricky part would be working on the motor itself, but even that would not be impossible.

I fouled three rims with that muck. I broke one down and cleaned it, it was going down every day. The other two only lose a few pounds a day but I'll eventually have to do them too. I've never gotten that from any other trails. That mud is incredible. I must have scrubbed that bead for thirty minutes.

Just a follow up...

got a winch motor from dbelectrical and hooked it up tonight...runs like a champ!

Will be assembling the cado on Friday night and taking a crew to lake allatoona.

hehe...

I was concerned I had a total failure...as I took it apart and realized how much of the winch was in good condition and easily serviced I changed my tune.

That, and I found that dbelectrical motor for $150.

It is all running again, and line speed, etc are way better (surprise).
