I have both except my mossberg is the 590A1 variant and the 870 is my field gun. The regular 500 vs the 870 is mostly neck and neck except:
1. The mossberg uses dual extractors which the 870 doesn't.
2. The mossberg is a little lighter.
3. The mossberg is a little faster/easier for me to load

Because my 590 is not a field gun I can't really compare how they shoot except to say I like them both a lot. In fact, it's been too long since I've shot either and there seem to be a lot of feral pumpkins around in need of some blasting.

The only other consideration in the 500 / 870 choice, in my opinion, is the location of the safety. The 500 is on the tang and falls more conveniently to hand for me for a field gun. My $0.02

My consideration between the 500 and 870 was the safety as well. I like how the 870 safety is right next to the trigger, easy to hit and detect with my thumb. I have to take my right hand off of the lower to actuate the safety on a 500.

Another 870 guy here. I've owned two now. Absolutely love them.

Tired of this thing sitting under my bed, $350 for everything.

Phil, what is the model of the Baikal? And do you still have it?

I do still have it, I will get you more info and pics at lunch. Just shot an 84 with it at Meadwood Farms, so while it does have shorter barrels it works pretty well as a clay gun. Would work great for bird hunting if you do any of that. Here is a review that I think captures it pretty well

I like Phil, but have been going by Patrick since 1983, haha.

sorry Patrick, low oxygen moment! Packing for business trip and typing all too much for me. Will be on the road from now until tonight, will look into it. I do want to shoot slugs too.

Model 310, slugs should be no problem with the right choked. Comes with 4 cokes, modified, cylinder, improved cylinder, and full. There are a couple of marks on the barrel on each side where the forend attaches.

Not sure if anyone uses Arm s list, but it is the Clist of buns.

Might want to consider this, too, if you want a pump:

SuperNova Pump Shotgun
I was an 870 guy till I got my Benelli Supernova. The 500 and 870 are almost identical with a few differences here and there. The Supernova is a different beast. It is smooth, solid, quiet, and the break down is so much easier than the other two. For tall guys the Supernova also allows adjusting the angle of the butt stock with shims. It takes 3 1/2" shells and has a Remington style safety and release.

That's expected though, that the Benelli is better than the mossberg and remington pumps. It's a whole different class in terms of cost:

I have always liked Remington shotguns, currently have 3, an 870 Express Tactical, an older 1100 field gun and a 1100 competition. I have thousands of rounds through the competition shooting trap and 5 stand. Heather and I have started looking at clay throwers of late :)

Picked this up for Stacy a few weeks ago. She's always been a fan of the Mystichrome mustangs, this sig was perfect.

Any experience with Remington 1100 Semi-auto? Got a bead on one, 30" barrel. Reviews on-line seem pretty good too. It is used.

I like mine Izzy. I bought the Competition model the first year they came out. Really nice walnut burl on the stock and fore grip. My field 1100 is what I shot when I first got into trap and 5 stand. I made a pretty cool shell catcher for mine so I don't have to chase shells after a round.

Thanks Stan, thats what I have been reading, they seem to be highly regarded for any starting clay games. The one I found is a 1970, 30" with fixed modified choke. There is another in town, 1991 vintage, 28" with IC choke. The newer one looks better, nicer wood. The older one looks like the business. But its not that much younger than me! The action moves like silk.
Any other thoughts?

They are pretty straight forward to clean etc. Being a gas gun they require more attention than a standard breach load or pump. I will show you the shell catcher and can make you one if you want one.
No reason you cant buy both :) My field gun has machine engraving on it.

That clay thrower is looking better and better :) Maybe an X-mas bonus to me.
