weather strip; hood to cowl

Harry; thanks for the info......it looks like it is only one number for either side but cannot get the number part to be legible; can you please post it separately? TIA

Lou

Here's how Toyota lists them FWIW

JC Whitney door to frame seal

Share Scorchers impressions; having had experience though with both the JC Whitney and SORs strip; after over a year; IMO SORs is a better fit BUT they BOTH work well;HTH...

Lou

Just a quick observation/update. I used the jcwhitney stuff, listed on the first page of the thread. (body moulding zx132562b) There seems to be a recurring concern about the difficulty of closing the doors. I found this was true when I assembled the truck, however....
After one year, the doors shut just fine, and are still tightly sealed.

They appear to be 55791-90331 and 55792-90331 (or it might be 90351). i don't remember, but i may have listed the numbers in the pig parts thread

...the older saab looks pretty good and a volvo looked like a real good candidate. i'll report back if/when i try these on the actuall 55 door.

I have not made it through the entire thread, but I did not want to lose track of this reference...

Any pics of the Saab stuff?

This is a pic comparing the SOR stuff to the JC Whitney. I used the SOR on my doors and the JC Whitney stuff on the sides for the tailgate.

IMG_0671.jpg

JCW is on top and SOR is on bottom?

Or in other words the SOR is round?

$1515 plus whatever the cost of the cargo windows and the JC Whitney W/S supplies, plus shipping... That's over $2000 for rubber stuff. However, we're kind of backed in to a corner when it comes to it. That is definitely more than what I paid for my FJ55. I guess it's just one of those things we'll have to live with or without.

Where do you get this number from?

Haven't found where to get the rear window run channel for the tailgate. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thanks again for this info. Brett

I need these as well!

Weeboo,
That looks like the run channel for the body. I need the channel that is on either side of the tailgate (inside the tailgate) that the window runs up and down in.
Thanks Brett

No sir, I've got that. What I need is the channel that the window sits in as it rides up and down within the tailgate. Not the channel that holds it as it goes up and down but the channel that it slides in on either side of the tailgate as it moves up and down. (2 pieces, one on either side inside the tail gate) Brett

I thinks its the window channel that's used on the doors. JC Whitney carries it

Lou

Lou, did you use this Style 20 on your tailgate?

IIRC, the window channel on the rear windows is deeper than the doors. This was one of the parts I could not order out of a catalog, but had to "wing it" with stuff from the hardware store. I meant to do an update on this thread when I finished, but apparently, in my rush to finish, I neglected to.

Maybe read my thread on the rebuild. post #147 talks about the rear window tracks. Vague, but it is all I posted on the issue.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pig-preservation-society/118502-fj55-deconstruction-5.html

I know I used spray glue, and some flat felt about an inch or so wide and maybe 1/8th of an inch thick, folded it into the channel, and trimmed off the excess. I wish I remembered where I found the felt stock.

I found some of the stuff I used for the rear window channels. The baby jar is there for size reference.

rearwindowfelt.jpg

How is this holding up?

:hhmm:personally am a bit leery of felt because of its ability to hold moisture..............:eek:that is all we need in our piggies innards; moisture against high carbon steel in those unobtainable tracks;
Lou/Brett if you could post pix of what you have? or perhaps even send me a small "2 inch" section I can try to get a match HTH

Lou

as Marshall noted; measurements of the metal channel would help also

I feel the same about glueing felt to metal.

Marshall, you have my help. Mine were rotted and I need new ones. I have an advantage in that I am at my college. Not only do I have free time, but next door to my building, which is highly equipped with manual and CNC machines, is the National Elastomer Center which houses both the Plastics Engineering and the Rubber Engineering programs. So, a trip to some professors office may help us. I was thinking about that 'cut and paste' method and with the right glue, possibly some fixtures/jigs, this could be a very good and cost effective option. If we figure out the 2 different profiles, and someone has a brand new seal, I could do some "engineering stuff" to make a jig that would allow successful gluing and setting.

Brian

Thanks Brian! Any word on these?

OK this part for our pigs has been unavailable for sometime and have been scouring online to find a substitute to no avail:frown:; it is a complicated composite piece with felt wipers bonded to the rubber on the inner three surfaces.........thanks to "Wallace" for sending this sample;
Depth= 11/16ths......17.50 mms
Height= 7/8ths.........22.14mms
outer width= 11/16ths...17.50mms
inner width= 3/8ths........10mms
any ideas on sources:hhmm:
TIA

Lou

Lou, thanks for these pictures and specs!

Lou, have you seen this:

Precision Replacement Parts ALL-RUBBER WINDOW CHANNELS : JC Whitney: Car Parts & Accessories

There are more pages, but I'm too tired to look further.

Best

Mark A.

Good stuff Mark, thanks!

Mark; have requested some samples; will share my findings, thanks again;

Lou

Lou, any findings?

Lou,

I have used JC Whitney, Style 24, ZX184879T for the door window channels in a customer's door. Sorry no pictures. You have to make your own 90 degree cuts. Tell me what you think when you get a sample.

John, thanks for this and all you are doing for 55's!!! :cheers:

Any pics of the Saab stuff?

Rhino made reference to old Saab or Volvo rubber working for Pigs.

the older saab looks pretty good and a volvo looked like a real good candidate. i'll report back if/when i try these on the actuall 55 door.

A search of the 55 forum did not yield results.

Can anyone comment on Saab rubber working for Pigs?

Charles and fellow knights, here are pix of the lower tailgate rubber of of a trashed 79 pig; it is a very complex piece; the two vertical pieces are almost like the SOR body to door weather seals;there is woven metal channel attached to a round tubular seal; where as the lower horizontal portion is an L- shaped piece of medium firmness rubber also with a round hollow tubular seal component; the vertical and horizontal components are "Glued"? joined together at the corners kinda like the upper tailgate seal manufactured by Slocruisers.......now, where do we go from here as am sure we will all need this item eventually !

Lou

On my '74 I have 3 sep pieces.

2 uprights fit on the body seam, the lower horizontal is glued on...

Not sure if they are orig, but they have been in service for a while.

I can take pics if needed?

Sorry for the long delay - from my 55 parts fiche

Weatherstrip - Hood to Cowl
RH 55791-90351 for all years 69 - 80
LH 55792-90351 for all years 69 - 80

I have not done my tailgate yet, I just assumed it was the same channel as the doors.
What about 60 or 62 tailgate channel? Does the 60 or 62 internal taligate have side channels like the 55?

Lou

hood to cowl weatherstrip

:hhmm: trying to figure this one out......what seems to be the difference?, can one straight strip be glued in place giving it a curve and solve the problem?.........my thoughts are that a straight rubber extrusion can be made up but 2 molded curved pieces would be very pricey:frown:.....don't have much enough left on mine to get an idea if it is an extrusion or a molded piece....does anyone here have a "NOS" part to see if it is molded or extruded ? TIA

The '55 is the only 'Cruiser with a power tailgate window. The '60/'62 are way different.

The numbers I got for total cost are from the different vendors, I just added them all up. As far as making the jig to produce the fixed window seals, I do not have a pattern to go by, as my seals were so deteriorated I had to pitch them. If you could find the profiles I would be happy to make them myself. Wouldn't be OEM Toyota quality, but I'd do my best. It'd be good enough to stick on my rig, which means it'd work and look not-to-bad.

So, does anyone have a lead on the two profiles of the fixed window weatherstripping? I understand a low production run is being looked into, but I am curious if there is an alternative. I'm not trying to undermine, just exploring all options.

Brian
