i thought you sold that orange boogie? i think you are more tolerant than i am so go ahead, pull the trigger. does your wife at least have something to drive?

jason - i hear you about the list-itis of looking for things to fix. i feel this so much that i often post in the 80s list that we are being too anal as used car owners. however, when it leaves you stranded, that is another thing. i started a thread in chat once that the landcruiser has left me stranded more than any other kind of vehicle in the short 19 years i have been driving. i have been stranded a total of 5 times. 4 of them were in landcruisers (not while wheeling either).

i am hoping this tie rod and rear pinion are the last things for the cruiser for a while.

i think it should be stated Land Cruisers have hte "potential" to go anywhere:)

Pumpkin is still in the garage and should be staying there for a long time. Things have transpired at work that are making 2009 look a bit better. Will know in the next few weeks how it pans out. If things go well the pumpkin stays, if money gets tight it'll go.

did some work to the new 80 today took out the seats and carpet can cleaned the hell out of her amazing how well these trucks clean up just ned a lot of Q-tips

No offense Pete but you suck at wrenching. That's your biggest issue with reliability.

Owning a 12 year old truck and having it be reliable takes a keen eye to see the obscure and the hands to prevent the inevitable.

i am the first to admit that (at least i try though) which is why i need to get out of owning one altogether.

Owning a 12 year old truck and having it be reliable takes a keen eye to see the obscure and the hands to prevent the inevitable.

my point is that it shouldn't require that keen an eye but my point is wrong i am sure so it is what it is. i will shut up from now on when it comes to my own experiences and s***ty wrenching.

however, if we get back to the original question, when it comes to having a 12+ year old truck then as a daily driver - if you cant fix it yourself, cant dedicate the enormous amount of time it takes using said keen eye, dont find being stranded an adventure, dont use one as a DD.

Pete, you have the ability to be a much better wrench than you are. You just need to apply yourself.

Make a list of what parts you think are original and the ones that have been replaced. Then check the expected life of those against your odometer to get a feel for what might come up.

Do a routine inspection once a month for leaks and loose joints. This helps you get to know your vehicle and when something changes you will know it.

Go through and make a list of the last time each fluid was changed. Then make plans to change them yourself, with help if you can find it.

Teach yourself how to grease drive line components and check brake pad thickness.

This stuff is not hard and if you tackle one item a month and let us know what you are looking at we can help walk you through it. You'll get the knowledge and hands on you need to be comfortable with the truck.

The other alternative is to buy something brand new with a nice long maintenance plan and leave it to someone else, but there is no guarantees that you won't break down then either.

This process can be very rewarding and quite gratifying, you just need to commit to it.

Seeing Pete's post's one would think he doesn't know the difference between a screw driver and a wrench. but having wrenched with Pete a few times he is a far better wrencher than he comes across on the net.
just my bservation

I think this is the hard part when people want an 'older' vehicle. They dont realize that even if it runs MINT now, that could change any minute, and there needs to be an ear listening to the vehicle and trying to anticipate whats gong to happen next.
IE: if its a mini truck with 250K on it, it could be running great! BUT if its never had a timing chain... its going to in the next 20K
The trade off with an older vehicle vs newer with a payment is that time you need to spend looking it over and listening to it. OR you could pay $400/month and have a powertrian warrenty. :D This is why my wife has a new scion TC. Its my trade off, either stress of worring about the car and her complaining about the old car, or paying the cash. :hmm:

So I've nailed down some freelance work this week and really need to launch my own webspace to host test links and such. Obvioulsy I'll build a simple website of my own up there as well.

I'm pretty frustrated that all the good URL's are taken :) :) :) I really anted something in the area of onepixel.com or 72pixels.com or whatever, something that would accommodate not only our design business but also a line of designer centric shwag that Sara and I are developing... but no luck so far.

I can't even get my own name.

Any suggestions?

Hey man, I'm ok with wrenching, not awesome.

I'm not presently employed, and I've been spending my days working on my buddies house for food and friendship.

If you can cover gas (I'm not far) I can definitely give you a hand depending on how house stuff is going.

John,
Drain your diff. fluid first and check that.
Since your in 2wd and your hubs aren't engaged I'd bet that you need some wheel bearings up front. Jack up the front, both tires in the air, hubs unlocked, t-case in 2wd, and try turning them by hand. If the bearings are that bad you'll feel it. Have you fixed the rear perches yet? Post what you find

Didn't fix the perches yet but I tightened up the U bolts and that did the trick temporarily. this is a very different noise
