spent the day looking for an internal floppy drive. I thought these were no longer needed. Ended up going to ebay and buying one there. This puts the new system off for another week. Dang-it!

why do you need a floppy drive

the new system will have a raid 0 setup for the hard drive. Because of this I need to be able to load system specific drivers so that Windows will load on to it. This is done through the floppy drive while you are in the system setup portion of the windows install. This was typical when I used to load NT on dec alphas but never gave it any thought when I was assembling this one.

No one like staples or anyone had one? I still can't believe they still haven't put that stuff in BIOS of most motherboards, I heard rumors they were starting to but have yet to see one. Its been years which is like centuries in computer stuff...:) What are the specs of what you're building?

No One has them. Staples had them on the clearance self but they were gone when I came in.

Duo core quad Q6600 clocked to 3.2GHz

4 gig ram at 1333 MHz

2 SATA 1TB 32mb drives Raid zero at 6GBs transfer

PCI express 2.0 1024mb 9500gt video card

Asus P5QC mb

The issue is that XP doesn't support the raid controller within the install disk. So you have to install the driver for windows to be able to work with the raid. This has to be done before any files are copied to the drives and that is why you need the floppy drive. It allows windows to copy the driver along with the other start up files to ram so it can then format the drives and start to install the files to the drives.

Off to work tomorrow and the new flopy drive will be here when I return.

so on to my next question what is a floppy drive. sorry i just had to Rick:D

I've never been a huge fan of CT and yesterday sealed it. I was headed down the Merritt Raceway going about 80 mph when my battery light came on. Thought it odd but I'm due for a new battery anyway. Then the steam started. Looked down and the temp gauge was buried in the red. Had to go another mile before there was a pull off area to safely get off the road. Popped the hood and my serpentine belt was all twisted up in the fan blade. Not good for an aluminum engine. BMW is toast. My own fault but I blame CT.

Got a rental, got lost in the rental, got pulled over in the rental for being on the phone for directions because I was lost in the rental.

Looks like I might be driving the pumpkin 24-7 starting now or I might need to sell it quick to get $$$ for a DD which would obviously be a BJ70. Mixed feelings about the BMW dying.

I will be driving home to boston through NY, VT, and NH so as to avoid entering CT ever again.

wondering if I can part out the BMW and make some cash back

I think you could avoid CT by takeing the point orient, NY ferry to new London then taking the New London Ferry to block Island then block island to point Judith RI.

I would keep the pumkin and buy a yarius for your long travel. seems the growing craze amoungest land cruiser owners. fox just stuck 2 amps in his and 2 12 inch subs.

Turns out the head survived but the head gasket did not. The pulley fell off while driving so that's why the belt failed. Not much I could've done. $1800. I'm keeping the BMW (unfortunately)

My cutoff price for fixing it was $2000 and the final bill is $1950. I'd scrap it but the guy already started the work so it's too late. Ugh.

and this was all over a broken serpentine belt?

the pulley fell off the front of the engine which threw the belt. gasket gone, water pump gone, heater system stuff cracked/shot, and a list of other small crap. Labor is a biatch too. Most modern cars are built that if you're belt snaps, your screwd

sucks man hopefully the repair goes well with out any more surprises

Passed out at work today. They were doing a blood drive and I have donated before. Anyway they finished up getting the blood out of me and I am sitting on the recliner thing they use and they ask me how I was doing. I said I was a little light headded. She said a little or a lot.... Next thing I know I am looking up at a woman that I didn't recognize. I knew I was at work and I felt like I was on drugs. Took me a few minutes to come through. Very weird.
