I am bustin butt on the house to get it ready for the refi, we want to consolidate some cc debt and put some money away for vaca next year
If you find the right appraiser you won't have to bust yer butt too much. have a talk with your mortgage guy first before killing yourself.

i am pondering the same thing... some of the things that i am considering:
do drive on the highway much?
is it easy to park?
can i leave things locked in it with out worrying?
will it leave me stranded?
does my wife hate getting in and out of it?
can i hear the stereo?
does it drive well in the rain?
to me, those are the DD questions i need to consider. the nice thing about being here is it is either a 20 minute drive around town (its a small city) or its an 8 hour drive on the highway (its a large state). so, for me, we are taking the subaru on long treks anyway. so, its about what is most fun driving around town?

Long story, but right now we have no permanent access to the 2nd floor, trying to make the attic into a accual 3rd bedroom. :LoL: If we lived in NH or ME, the 8ft stepladder would be just fine, but not in MA.
But I am planning on paying him a vist soon, once I get over to the bank.
The 70 seats are far more comfortable than the 40 ones as they have the Air Ride type suspension in them like large trucks have. I would think that they run much quieter than a 40 as well.
I'm in the same mindset. I mostly drive around town but drive to the office once a week (3 hrs round trip) Also drive to VT, NH, and NY once a month.
I would think once the truck has been fixed up a bit and all the bugs worked out, it would be fairly reliable??!!?

I just think that in order to get it that reliable you (or I) would need lots of time getting it there. Of 3 cruisers I have had, none as old as a 70 series, the only one that has not left me stranded was KLFs '88 FJ62. I think that says a lot about what needs to go into these trucks to get em back to where they need to be.
Rick and Nat just basically said that an 80 with 125+ miles on the clock needs at least 2 grand in parts alone to be rock solid and that does not even include all the cooling parts that need replacing around that time as well.
I am not sure what needs baselining on a diesel engine but at the very least you will need fluids and an axle job i am guessing and next would be the cooling system...
If it were your ONLY long haul family vehicle I would not do it if I were you.

the trick is to do all the maintence and upgrades yourself. then these vehicles take on a different perspective. or have a trusted mechanic close by either way you have to be prepared to have the truck off the road for a few days every couple months and feel the need , the constant need to mess with it. I used to be more of a cyber wheeler buying every possible add on. but I have slowly become more of a wrenching cruiser addict. with alot of help I have learned lots and can fix my junk most of the time. and know what needs to be done. to me that was the hardest part was learning how to diagnose a problem
one observation I have made over the years though is while I was an avid member of the 3fe list that was geared toward the 3fe engine found in the 88-91 land cruisers exclusively there would be waves of repairs that would strike. like the gear in the transfer case that 'can cause' a clunk and wear on the output shaft. suddenly everyone is scrambleing for the Australian made replacement gear to the extend 8 of us gathered in PA for a gear installation bash. Anyway of the 5 trucks that had the gear replaced 2 actually needed it 2 were starting to show signs of wear but nothing immenant and 1 was actually fine. while you learn alot from these lists and forums sometimes they can suck you in and before you know it you have sent your injectors out to be tune your throttle body is bored out 3mm your headers are taken off and the stock manifold put back on and you have turned the white lettering to the inside on your tires all to conform with the list wisdom.
I am not saying these fixes and upgrades are not needed and useful. my fj62 was a sweet running cruiser and benifited imensely from the collective brain trust. but i do think you need to drive your cruiser and if it breaks fix it but don't be scared that it is going to break buy a new honda if that is your worry. AAA is 30 bucks a year and I use it all the time. I like old cars but old cars break and you just got to be ready for it and fix it when it happens. my favortie par to f reading an expedition article is seeing how they deal with something breaking.
just my 2 cents on a cold day. I am schedualed to meet the auto shipper to drop off the fj62 at 4-7pm tonight. kind of sad. but I am a one cruiser dude it will be nice to get back to one cruiser for awhile.

I fully plan on becoming a diesel expert, like it or not. The way I see it is yes, I will get stuck and it will break down but while it is running I will be having way more fun. That said, it is a Toyota so when something is fixed once, generally it won't need a fixin for a good long time. I love working on trucks even though I suck at it. Will be fun to keep learning.
The engine is a 3B that was installed 4 years ago by a cruiser mechanic in Montreal. Apparently he's the best up there. Therefore I'm assuming the block, head, injectors, etc are all in good shape and should be for a long time. The ancillary parts like exhaust, suspension, brakes, axles, rust, radiator, etc I'm sure will need constant attention. If I prioritize and pick at these items then in short time I should be in good shape. The key is the engine is strong so I'll be able to get to point B. I also have a completely rebuilt 70 series H55F with zero miles on it in that container from AU. No transmission worries ever.
Parts will be a bitch but I have the pumkpin as backup if needed. Selling my BMW will drop my insurance rates to nothing, no more car payment, and my excise tax will be about $15 per year. This will save me $$ each month and will help with repairs. The BMW will eventually need repairs too but the BMW will be worthless eventually while the 70 will likely only go up in value. That's appealing.
Basically I always feel like I'm cheating on the pumpkin whilst I drive the BMW. This way whilst driving the 70 it'll be like I'm cheating with it's midget sister. Keepin it in the family.

Since the Sox wines are dead, I;ve been networking and prospecting new distributors for my organic stuff. I remembered that a past contact was now a VP of a big distributor in 5 states that I need distribution in. I emailed her today but had her name mixed with the details of a woman who once worked there but was fired. her response was a bit ugly......
Needless to say it was a bit embarrassing and that contact is officially gone now! Oh well. Nuthin a glass of wine won't fix.

FYI: I just opened the last bottle of red I got from ya, 2006 ruiz villanueva. Its great stuff, but let the spaniards know they need to find a new cork supplier, little fawker broke 3 times before I got it out. The cork bits add to the 'robust strong flavor'
