I don't twitter or facebook, so you'll have to follow our trip here. However, we love my wife's new I-Phone. Despite what you see on the coverage maps for out west, we have had 3G almost everywhere, at least where it is flat, and it is very flat in more places than there are mountains and canyons so far.

Spent most of yesterday in Wyoming. Avoid most of it if you can. Like being on the moon except for the BigHorn National Park in the eastern part. It's all mile high plus and desolate except for this. 403.webp

Arrived at Moab today, just under 3700 miles into our journey. 447.webp

Got tech inspected after the 5 PM deadline and my trail assignments. Being a persistent Yankee paid off there and gets me another 1/2 hour of sleep in the AM. Will officially register first thing tomorrow as registration really did close at 5 and I needed to show my tech inspection certificate to register. There's a lot of great rigs here, built FJ Cruisers and all those straight axle LandCruisers we love so much. Tube fenders and tires outside the bodywork are so cool. I'll be getting some pictures of trucks for sure!

Glad we finally got the bastard! 369.webp

We couldn't get into Yellowstone from the east, all the passes are still closed due to snow. Found this out after driving 150 miles northwest to only encounter a flashing light that said the road was closed 50 miles ahead. We called YNP rangers to confirm. Didn't have time to go all the way around the top to come in from Montana or the west gate, it was bad enough having to backtrack most of the 150 miles. Maybe next time.

Here's some eastern WY scenes in the BigHorn area. Our highest point on the road was just over 9K feet. Route 16 west from Buffalo to Thermopolis (who can make names up like that?). Reminded us of the White Mountains except for the extra expanse and elevations. We were lucky to get through as thse roads shut down often due to snow.

If I had known that YNP was closed, we would have spent an hour or two following this legal trail in eastern WY instead of just the first 1/4 mile.

My daughter got confirmation on her internship at a sound studio out in San Francisco. I'm really happy for her and we'll be driving out to CA the day after her graduation party Sunday June 12.

Mapquest says 49 hour drive and I have a red eye home Thursday night!

I've been working through the cars little issues and finished it off yesterday with an AC repair.

I haven't done a marathon drive in a long time.

Phew...better load up that music player! Have fun!

Anyone have a good idea about how to get rid of 10 years worth of old motor and gear oil?

I thought I was going to get it out at Hazardous Waste Day but they aren't taking it. Household Hazardous Waste Collections for 2011

Garages and auto parts stores never take more then a little at a time from me without a hassle and I've got about a dozen big jugs in my garage. I know...I know.... I should have been getting rid of it as I created it but I don't have a time machine so that option is moot. ;)

Find a shop that burns it for heat then I would assume they'll take it all.

x2 - Our town garage burns it, they will take as much as you have. I also have have a buddy who has one of those stand alone external furnaces and he burns it as well. You shouldn't have too much of a problem finding someone to take it.

Ditto on the oil disposal. Maybe try call junkyards to find out what they do with it. There are a lot of folks burning it these days.

Our transfer station took used oil until they closed our transfer station.

Our rural town progressed from burying trash in your own back yard to having a dump, then closing and capping that and then having a transfer station, and then closing the transfer station. We now have road side pickup for recycling and all the trash they pick up along with that goes to an incinerator that makes electricity. (Oil burns, doesn't it?)

I put four 31.50X15 tires out before I left for the west and they took them all in one pickup when they used to only take one per stop. It wasn't that long ago that throwing flashlight batteries away was a no-no, and now it is OK in my town. Maybe some of the hazardous stuff is either more recyclable or less hazardous than we used to think? It would be nice if there was a use for every leftover from our consumption.

When I was on my trip, nearly every motel touted being green. If you stayed more than one night they gave you an option of changing linens and towels daily or not.. On the other hand, every shower only ran at a full 3 gallons a minute plus blast with more hot water than I use to heat my home in the winter. Never mind those stupid water saving toilets that require 3 flushes (I am full of it, you know).
