the Dilemma
so i get my freshly v8-ed fj45lv 9for those who don't know it) back from my mechanic. after it being at his shop since the end of January. he is a normal mechanic but his second lift he keeps for longer projects either his own or others with classic cars. he is a chevy truck enthusiast and is known for doing the time consuming work on old cars that dealerships usually steer away from or charge an arm and a leg for. anywya the localmovie location manager has him on speed dial in that he knows where all the clssics are in town.
So he calls me last night I assumed to ask me how the truck was running but instead he tells me there is a movie filming in town, some sort of disaster comedy that takes place in the 60's and they are looking for a 1964 station wagon they want to paint black and white to look like a police wagon. they pay pretty well but i would have to get it painted black and white. since Wilma is lifted I am not sure its what they are looking for but they might opt to use it as a period vehicle of which they are looking for several. I could mean being without my truck for another month though:( not sure I am ready for that. we'll see

Seems like a no brainer. Free paint and they'll pay you and you can say, Yeah, that's my truck when you watch the movie.

Maybe they'll pay to repaint it afterwards?

I would of done the "Expedition West" trip and take the detour to Vegas but I'm pretty sure our families would frown upon it.
Gas to Vegas in my 80 may be about the total price tag on our wedding anyways..lol

Black and white paint would be a great improvement. I say go for it

We went cheap on the wedding as well, by necessity. A friend did the flowers, used the church basement for the reception, "catered" by relatives, our own music. We still had a great time.

We did it cheap too, $50 for the JP, got married at a trailhead up in the Whites. Hiked up to a campsite and spent the night. Spent the second night at an AMC hut, (that broke the budget)!

We did an all-inclusive wedding in Mexico. Wedding, reception, flight, hotel, food, booze for 5 days cost us $3200 total.

Were you also able to buy and import some exotic LandCruiser model?

My first time around it was a few family members at a church in Rye, NH and a reception in the church basement. no music. That cost me zero. We went to Florida in my '64 Falcon Sprint convertible for the honeymoon. I should have kept that car, but the marriage did last 10 years "officially". I lost the '74 FJ40 in the divorce settlement (this is back in '78), but I got it back when she realized it wasn't her idea of a a daily driver. :steer:

Second time around it was in the field at the Mary Baker Eddy birthplace in Bow, NH with a few family members. My in-laws paid for the reception for friends, co- workers and family at a local restaurant. No music, but it was all good. We booked 10 days in Bermuda that we paid for and wound up staying 2 weeks. We were flat broke when we got home. Still together after 28 years being married and 5 years being together before that.

I'm not sure if it costs less to get married in NH due to fewer rules, lower taxes or because shotgun shells are cheaper :hillbilly:

My son will probably splurge for the reception at the country club, etc. Plus they are geeks and want to go to Japan for the honeymoon, that will be spendy. On the other hand, they can well afford that and their own ammunition.

IMHO, spending a bunch of money on a wedding and reception that entertains friends and family doesn't make the event any more memorable or insure a good and long lasting marriage. On the other hand, you are inviting club members, right?

Congrats Bob to you and your bride! Long life and happiness!

I think I could live with a black and white paint job. the way it works is they will have it repainted but that comes out of what they pay you. so at say 400 a day for the car and they use it for 2 weeks or 5600 and a paint job coast 3000 I would net 1600. it would be on me to repaint it back which I am more then capable o doing :) here is a link to the movie

ideally since my car is painted period colors it would not need to be painted. but they want them looking new in period paint jobs. note to anyone with a classic car think long and hard on how you paint it. while that metallic blue pearl may look kewl the original color scheme might make you some money.
Flipper posted a link awhile back with a company out of new york that does a car placement service. I have my truck registered with them as well almost made it in a polo ad but they went with a landrover instead.

I looked into having a truck wrapped and it costs about the same as paint. I guess that depends on the level of paint job though.
I was quoted $2500 on a Ford Ranger at work, we painted it and lettered it for less.

Maybe you'll like the paint scheme from the movie. You'll get more for it when you flip it.

Hi guys. I have not been on in a while. Been real busy building a new sugarhouse, setting up took about twice as long due to the deep powder. Now we are boiling. The sap is running good and the weather has been a little cool for good runs. We had our all time record day making 203 gallons of fancy. Now a homebrew and bed. I can't wait to go wheeling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome back! Save me a gallon, we're out!

So on Saturday my buddy Russ calls me and tells me his nephew has a friend with a 95 Jeep YJ for sale for $1k. Could be a good deal to flip and he wants to know if I want to split the work/profit with him. A year or two ago we bought a bucket of a TJ for $300 and sold it two days later for $1500. I told him I was up for looking at it.

Well I guess his nehpew brought the truck by Russ' house while I was at work. I guess the fender was crunched and had a couple rust spots on the outside of the tub but the inside if the tub was nice. Some other small issues but he said it ran nice and shifted into 4lo smoothly. Since Russ had hip surgery a week ago he couldn't get on the ground to check things out but his nephew said the frame was good. His nephew bought one over a year ago (which I pulled out of the mud with the 45) had a serious problem with frame rot. Russ told his nephew that we would probably grab it but he wanted me to look at it.

So we went to check it out on Monday night. Here is what I saw wrong.
Frame had a ton of scale on it. Small rot hole in the rear about the size of my pinky finger.
Cracked windshield
Pretty good oil leak from the rear main
No front drive shaft
bodydamage on the doors and some rot
missing the rear seat
been desmogged
front axle seal
radio ripped out
front seats ripped to hell
pass side door won't open from the outside
one rear tire bald
and the whole truck just plain sat funny like he had been beaten really bad or hit hard.

I tell Russ I can't be sinking any money into this pig. I told him if he still wanted to pick it up I would help him with the work.

He called me last night and wanted to have me take a look at it since it was at his house because he was going to get it for $850. The guy that dropped it off to him was his nephews friend (but not the owner). I guess the friend looked it over said there wasn't a place to put the driveshaft and that it must be a 2wd transmission. So I go over there to find the reason there isn't a place to put the drive shaft is that the transfer case was cracked wide open and the gears and output shaft to the front were missing. I didn't even notice this when I was under it the first time because the skid plate was in the way.

At that time Russ backed out but now the guy who drove it over to Russ' house is going to buy it for $650. He wanted to know if I wanted to put a new t-case in it. Nope, not at all. i don't want to touch it.
