So on Saturday my buddy Russ calls me and tells me his nephew has a friend with a 95 Jeep YJ for sale for $1k. Could be a good deal to flip and he wants to know if I want to split the work/profit with him. A year or two ago we bought a bucket of a TJ for $300 and sold it two days later for $1500. I told him I was up for looking at it.
Well I guess his nehpew brought the truck by Russ' house while I was at work. I guess the fender was crunched and had a couple rust spots on the outside of the tub but the inside if the tub was nice. Some other small issues but he said it ran nice and shifted into 4lo smoothly. Since Russ had hip surgery a week ago he couldn't get on the ground to check things out but his nephew said the frame was good. His nephew bought one over a year ago (which I pulled out of the mud with the 45) had a serious problem with frame rot. Russ told his nephew that we would probably grab it but he wanted me to look at it.
So we went to check it out on Monday night. Here is what I saw wrong.
Frame had a ton of scale on it. Small rot hole in the rear about the size of my pinky finger.
Cracked windshield
Pretty good oil leak from the rear main
No front drive shaft
bodydamage on the doors and some rot
missing the rear seat
been desmogged
front axle seal
radio ripped out
front seats ripped to hell
pass side door won't open from the outside
one rear tire bald
and the whole truck just plain sat funny like he had been beaten really bad or hit hard.
I tell Russ I can be sinking any money into this pig. I told him if he still wanted to pick it up I would help him with the work.
He called me last night and wanted to have me take a look at it since it was at his house because he was going to get it for $850. The guy that dropped it off to him was his nephews friend (but not the owner). I guess the friend looked it over said there wasn't a place to put the driveshaft and that it must be a 2wd transmission. So I go over there to find the reason there isn't a place to put the drive shaft is that the transfer case was cracked wide open and the gears and output shaft to the front were missing. I didn't even notice this when I was under it the first time because the skid plate was in the way.
At that time Russ backed out but now the guy who drove it over to Russ' house is going to buy it for $650. He wanted to know if I wanted to put a new t-case in it. Nope, not at all. i don't want to touch it.
Yea, run away from that one!
