So on Saturday my buddy Russ calls me and tells me his nephew has a friend with a 95 Jeep YJ for sale for $1k. Could be a good deal to flip and he wants to know if I want to split the work/profit with him. A year or two ago we bought a bucket of a TJ for $300 and sold it two days later for $1500. I told him I was up for looking at it.

Well I guess his nehpew brought the truck by Russ' house while I was at work. I guess the fender was crunched and had a couple rust spots on the outside of the tub but the inside if the tub was nice. Some other small issues but he said it ran nice and shifted into 4lo smoothly. Since Russ had hip surgery a week ago he couldn't get on the ground to check things out but his nephew said the frame was good. His nephew bought one over a year ago (which I pulled out of the mud with the 45) had a serious problem with frame rot. Russ told his nephew that we would probably grab it but he wanted me to look at it.

So we went to check it out on Monday night. Here is what I saw wrong.
Frame had a ton of scale on it. Small rot hole in the rear about the size of my pinky finger.
Cracked windshield
Pretty good oil leak from the rear main
No front drive shaft
bodydamage on the doors and some rot
missing the rear seat
been desmogged
front axle seal
radio ripped out
front seats ripped to hell
pass side door won't open from the outside
one rear tire bald
and the whole truck just plain sat funny like he had been beaten really bad or hit hard.

I tell Russ I can be sinking any money into this pig. I told him if he still wanted to pick it up I would help him with the work.

He called me last night and wanted to have me take a look at it since it was at his house because he was going to get it for $850. The guy that dropped it off to him was his nephews friend (but not the owner). I guess the friend looked it over said there wasn't a place to put the driveshaft and that it must be a 2wd transmission. So I go over there to find the reason there isn't a place to put the drive shaft is that the transfer case was cracked wide open and the gears and output shaft to the front were missing. I didn't even notice this when I was under it the first time because the skid plate was in the way.

At that time Russ backed out but now the guy who drove it over to Russ' house is going to buy it for $650. He wanted to know if I wanted to put a new t-case in it. Nope, not at all. i don't want to touch it.

Yea, run away from that one!

right now I'm in title hell. I grabbed the title for the tan 97 and went down to the DMV to get it retitled. I didn't realize that you do this only when you are registering it for going on the road. However the lady was nice enough to point out that the sellers never signed or dated the title during the trade in process at the dealer.

So I call down to MD and this nice lady answers the phone and I ask for this girl Pat who was the title person for the dealership. Turns out here new job is being the receptionist .

I explain the problem and she starts telling me that she's not sure what she can do. And in a very controlled voice I let her know that it's her lack of attention to detail that has gotten me into this predicament.

She asks me to fax her a copy of the title. I remind her that it's 2011 and ask if a scanned image sent via email will do?

On the 40 front, me being a dip****, I can't find that title and have to ask Jamie to help me out with a duplicate.

The bright side of things is that my lack of understanding the procedural aspects of putting a used car on the road probably worked in my favor.

Irony

My mother was recently sideswiped in her Honda Odyssey while sitting at a stop sign waiting to turn right. Two rice boys messing around bumped and lost control of their cars. This is a pic of one of the cars where it came it to rest after hitting her van. The driver was killed. Newspaper photographer saw the irony. Not to be gloomy...my mom is bruised but ok...her van is totalled. The cop told her that the side impact air bags saved her life.

Hey! Alex beat me to it. Leah and I had a baby girl on Saturday at 1:54pm. Zoe Lyla Corcoran. Very cute. Mom and baby are doing great!

I hadn't posted because I can't seem to get the pics out of my cameraphone onto email. I'll post one up asap.

(Cruiser-related cuz the first car she ever rode in was a 2005 GX470.)

UPDATE: Got some pics!!

Glad she's ok. Scary stuff. I'm surprised the airbag didn't go off in the car pictured. Plenty of jackholes on the road these days.

Ugly stuff and I'm very glad she's OK. The safety features in modern vehicles are worth the cost. Stuff likes makes me wonder why I still ride a motorcycle. We are all always only a breath or 2 away from tragedy.
