At this point, the alien on Summer Avenue sent me another care package. This one included a lifetime supply of JEGS stickers stuffed inside a paper towel holder:

And some new leaf springs:

so, next steps:

This hollow center channel doesn't seem to do much other than fill up with mud and water. So, I grabbed some great stuff foam that hadn't been sacrificed to a camp fire explosion yet:

i mentioned earlier that i wanted to get the axles assembled (with new wheels and tires) at my house.

this is why.

just cut old the old:

and in with new.

since i had added some horsepower and some upgraded stopping power, i thought i would work on some steering power next.

Given that i already had a GM pump/pulley on my engine, i went with the saginaw setup.

cut the hole

scabbed up the mounting plate for alignment

and mocked it up for a test fit:

burned it in:

slapped some paint on it:

threw in the new collumn bearing and attached the new yokes to the shaft:

new pittman arm and steering linkage to go with it. i used the hybrid drag link that has GM threads at the box and toyota threads at the tie rod. also used insert shims at the steering arms since the mini truck steering arms have oversized holes for for the land cruiser tie rod ends. again, fingers crossed that i did this right.

now that i worked my way through some of the mechanical stuff (hopefully), i decided to focus on some body work.

the hood was in pretty bad shape. lots of dents and roached out pinholes on the front.

so i laid down some fiberglass on the inside channel to give me a solid surface to work with:

all resources are fair game when working from inside the joint. the devil’s play doh (bondo) is no exception.

sanded and primed:

ordered some rattle can in toyota rustic green from route66 auto color. not a shown queen job, but good enough for a farm truck:

awesome. just awesome.

Satisfying. Love it.

a little more fiberglass tom-foolery to fix and strengthen the roached out tabs on the gas tank cover:

shaved off the excess and then hit it with the rattle can as well:

also, while i had the lizard skin at the ready, i decided to shoot the underside of the hood as well:

Awesome. Reliving my paint bomb/booth days with this.
