That coolant hose tee thing is for real

So... I'm a new owner of a 99 LX470 and I saw that it was highly recommended to change out every 90k. Being the LX is 20yrs old, I thought I'd change it myself tonight.

Let's just start with O... M... G....

One of them crumbled while I was taking it out. The other one seemed to have been changed out. Either case, I swapped them both with stainless steel hose tees found on Amazon.

If you haven't already, get some gloves, a small cup to catch spewing coolant, and change out those heater hose tees ASAP.

The hoses are equally important. Second photo, the hose closest and towards bottom of photo appears it could blow at any moment. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Good job on changing out the tees. I HIGHLY recommend changing out the hoses. The OEM tees and the Four Seasons tees that you appear to have used have slightly different diameters and the heat-cycled hoses might not like that. I'd also recommend changing out the worm clamps with #10 Breeze Constant Torque clamps. If you want to save a little money, read through the threads to find the Gates hose part numbers that can be cut to replace the OEM bends.

Its swollen like a balloon, prob twenty years old also. Once you see the new hoses installed it'll be pretty evident that those hoses have very little life left. One of those bursts, you have to react quickly to shut engine down or you'll overheat quickly, and theres no guarantee the temperature gauge will rise once fluid loss occurs, no hot antifreeze would be in contact with it, temp gauge could even drop but the engine will be overheating.

At this point in my life I change out any and all coolant hoses, clamps and nipples I can if I take them apart. Unless I know how old the hose is and it's under a few years old it's all getting replaced.

The only thing worse than changing out a fitting or a hose once, is having to do it twice.

FYI: THose screw hose clamps are not the OEM setup. Just suggest going back and checking that they are still tight after a few days.

Are you still running the stock radiator? That should be your next concern. It may be thicker plastic, but it's still plastic and breaks down over time. After draining and removing my old radiator while doing a timing belt, it really started to show it's age after drying out for a couple days. The whole top cap was suddenly yellow especially at the hose connection kinda like the color of the heater tees when they are removed and dry out.
I would always replace the hoses if replacing tees

thanks for this post! I recently had a tee break on my 2001 land cruiser. Can you tell me what metal ones you got on Amazon? I'd much rather use those than go back to plastic. Also I want to replace those hoses that connect to the tees, is that something i can only get from a toyota dealership, or will an auto parts store be able to get then for me? Thanks!
