I had forgotten this thread and post, so had to look at the date. At the time, the driving symptoms seemed to indicate something bleak. I took it to a local Toyota specialty shop here, and the problem was primarily a throttle position cable badly needing adjustment. With that, new O2 sensors, fuel filter, and tune up confirmed that the mechanical condition was sound, thereby making the restoration investment worthwhile (and now complete).
