hey all,

i'm considering selling my baby. this is a test to see if there is any kind of a market out there for this particular machine. it started life as a canadian issue 1981 BJ60.

sorry, don't have photos at this writing, but here's the goods:

  • All rusty body panels cut out and replaced with steel
  • Frame rust cut out and replaced with steel (including upper rear shock mount crossmember)
  • Spring-over-axle swap, using factory springs with an extra leaf added at each corner (equivalent to approx. 5”- 6” lift)
  • Front axle was “cut and turned” to maintain proper steering geometry
  • Interior 4 point roll bar
  • Hi-steer set up using Aqualu steering arm
  • Transmission upgraded to H55F 5 speed (re-bearinged)
  • Transfer case gone through and modified for 2Lo
  • Garrett GT2052S turbo with home-made exhaust manifold and intake crossover
  • 3” stainless steel and aluminized steel exhaust system
  • Pyrometer and boost gauges mounted on dash
  • Custom steel front winch bumper (no winch)
  • Custom steel rear bumper with 2” receiver, tied into quarter panel rock sliders
  • 16” x 7” steel wheels with 255/85R16 (honest 33 1/3”) Toyo M-55 tires
  • Custom front driveshaft (brand new)
  • Large side mirrors (European issue repos)

The diff housings are equipped with the factory 3.7:1 ring/pinion, but a set of factory low mileage 4.11s are available. The head was off the engine not long ago…new steel precups, rockers gone over, new valve seats and a nice, newly designed, factory head gasket! Brakes are nearly new all around. Turbo was virtually new when installed a year ago. Tires are less than a year old.

Sadly, the engine either needs repair or replacement. Replacement is much cheaper than a rebuild and good ones can be found for around $1,000 to $1,500 canadian. If you can just get a decent short block, then it could be even cheaper by using my cylinder head. Maybe you own a 3B already!

Vehicle is complete, just not running, and was a very reliable daily driver until engine spun a big end bearing a few months ago. The interior is worn, but typical for an old truck and completely workable. Look around and see what sort of BJ60 you can get for a few thousand bucks…usually a rusty, sagging truck with a good reputation. Or, buy this truck, drop in an engine (or short block and my cylinder head) and bolt everything back together and in a weekend you’ll be the envy of many! All the hard work is already done!

The vehicle is located in british columbia...about 5 1/2 hours north of seattle. Again, this is a test. if anyone is serious and thinks this vehicle is worth their energy, please let me know.

cheers,

roy

post up some pics for sure!

did I miss how much?

miloslavich,

no pics, sorry. the vehicle is being stored about 3 hours away from me, so i can't make it happen too quickly!

3 puppies,

i haven't come up with a price yet as i'm not entirely convinced i'm going to sell it. i'd be interested to know what kind of value you would place on such a beast, particularly in the u.s. where toyota did not offer a diesel engine in the land cruiser.

i know that the type and amount of work done to this vehicle can be expensive if someone pays to have it done...or not so expensive if a resourceful person can do it themselves...so value is flexible. what's worth thousands to one person might only be worth hundreds to another.

i'm guessing somewhere between 4 and 6 grand would be reasonable, but i could be completely off the mark.

man, g'luck with that sale, unfortunate about the motor...turns out there's a tboned bj60 here in s.ontario tha has a turboe'd 3B (benz turbo) that is not worth fixing the body for... drop that motor/h55 in and call it day, but were a continent apart. hmm, shipping for that would be about 1500 bucks to ontario...anyway, just rambling out loud.
cheers.

thanks for the thought, romey.

who knows? maybe it would be worth shipping out east? find a tractor/trailer outfit with room in the back of a trailer...

btw, it doesn't need an H55F...already got one!

tell your friends!

cheers,

r

The best thing about a BJ60 is the "B" and your neighbors to the south don't see enough of them. I think if you want to generate interest in the US you'll need to fix the current motor or include a good used one in the sale.
