Hey all,

So I’ve had a huge spate of bad luck with my GX lately. I replaced 4 tires that had ~10k miles on them and when I got the truck back from the tire shop, the alternator blew b/c the cam seals went and leaked oil all over it. Turns out, that’s an enormous job! Then today, when I finally drove it during a hot day, i realized the A/C is no longer blowing cold air. I’m hoping it’s just a recharge, but I’m concerned it might be a bigger issue with my luck.

Anyway, what do you think is a reasonable asking price in case I do decide to sell? It’s a nice truck, but it’s a tad small for our growing family and I’ve now spent 35% of the purchase price on repairs and I’m concerned what might be next. It’s a 2008 silver GX with 156k miles and here’s everything I’ve done so far:

HID low beams
LED interior lights
Ceramic window tint
XD wheels with brand new +1 size Nitto Grappler AT tires
Rear air suspension replaced with struts
New timing belt, water pump, alternator, etc.

This is how she looked a few months ago. There’s the usual door dings and whatnot, but there’s zero rust as she spent her first 9 years in CA.

Thanks!

You arent gonna find a vehicle with much lower maintenance costs for your needs. Also, tire issues can happen on any vehicle.

If you don't mind my asking, is it paid for? I had this same mentality years ago with a truck that i'd been taking care of and was paid off- I traded it for a vehicle with car payment attached and have kicked myself ever since, as that vehicle started needing repairs on top of the payment. So if you own it, fix it...just my $0.02

I would suggest doing a 40-point inspection at a Lexus dealer. My Auto Club AAA was offering a free 40-point inspection at any participating auto repair shop and both Lexus and Toyota dealers near me are participants.

See what the report says and then determine which repair items should be done right away and which ones can wait.

The 2008 is a good year, but your problems with the cam seals leaking was a bad one. Also, a/c doesn’t need a recharge. It’s a sealed system, so if you are losing refrigerant, then you have a leak. I hope it was caused by the cam seal leak because it’s not a common problem to leak a/c refrigerant.

Other worries would be the radiator and rear air bags.

Anyways, I would repair and keep because repairs done with oem parts will last a long time. However, I do agree you got some bad karma with your issues.

Assuming a clear 40-point inspection (from someone reputable, don't go somewhere that's small that doesn't have a solid customer base) I'd keep it - my $.02. Bum luck on the above-average needs encountered but in the end, it's still a Toyota so hopefully you're done with the unexpected repairs. Maintenance costs aren't fun but this isn't cancer (keep your chin up :)).

What other used vehicle would you be confident buying that won't also possibly wind up in the shop?
