Oh I remember those days... If you didn't have an Alpine and an EQ, then your stereo simply wasn't legit...

I put a Kenwood DVD/GPS unit in my 2000, and didn't bypass the factory amp. I did have a hiss on one of the inputs, and ended up with a ground loop isolator on that circuit to eliminate the hiss. The speakers sound WAY better than stock. The stock HU on the 100's is an embarassment to Toyota, IMHO. Lots of threads in the 100 section. The HU is dead simple to get out, and replace with a standard double DIN. A lot of people do bypass the OEM amp. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, so I'm not into the nth degree of possible sound clarity. Just something to blast the Rush on...

BTW, when I was a kid, I was happy to finally get a stereo that had electronic station presets, instead of the ones on my '77 Datsun pickup that manually moved the red needle up and down the scale... knowwhatimtalkinabout???

The install was simple enough with the correct harness adapter. Metra 70-8112 is the model number and is available on Amazon for about $5. Pretty plug and play, 5-6 wires need to be connected between the new stereo and the adapter harness. Hunter now has streaming Bluetooth for tunes and hands free phone. Sound is much better too.
The only down side to the harness is it doesn't have a connection for the auto dim feature, I will have to go back in at some point and add that wire to the Metra harness. Maybe I never will...

I tried this, but it depends on if your headunit supports it. My Kenwood has GPS/time-based dimming, not based on dash lighting voltage.

Funner, when installing stereo did you have to run a wire to emergency brake switch? I am wondering if this step is neccesary.

I didn't need to run any additional wires, just connected the wires in the harness I mentioned above to the new head unit and plugged the other end of the harness into the oem plug.

That wire is for in dash dvd so that a movie cannot be played while driving as it is illegal. Not connecting it effectively disables the DVDs function entirely.

what is all this stereo talk about - don't you guys rather want to listen to the engine and all the other noises the truck makes

y'all need a 40 - that'll cure of the stereo disease

No just means I would have to build a bigger stereo. :worms:There is no cure for the stereo disease.

You should install a iPad mini as the stereo head unit. I've done it in 100 series, 2 80 series and a 1st gen Tacoma. Tacoma was completely digital signal and sounded amazing.
