That MSD is nice and easy but at over 2400 bucks is kinda expensive. Any thoughts on Howell Fuel injection..

I've been running a Howell Universal V8 TBI system for 4 years and its been great. I like that they use all GM parts, so that if something does go belly up you can pick up a replacement anywhere.
For the price you really can't beat it.

I've heard nothing but good reports about affordable FI, they are probably who I'll go with when I do my 40. I had a '94 TBI chevy truck and it ran great until I swapped it at 270,000 or so. Never a fuel related problem.

Good news about Affordable and Howell, I just love how you can put the MSD ECU in the engine compartment. I wonder if I could source a weatherproof box for a GM ECU so I could still put it in the engine bay. Any ideaers??

There are GM applications that had weatherproof ECUs. The thing is that the ECU that is the most understood and tuned for other engines is the 1227747/1228747 that both AFI and Howell use and it's not weather proof. The 1227727 is an example of a weatherproof unit but it is based on a different ECU design internally.

Click the following to learn all you might want to know about tuning the 1227730/1227727.

Did it need any additional programming or is it self learning?

When you order the kit they ask for all the specifics about your engine, trans, rear end ratio and tire size. Then they custom burn an eprom for your application. You can send it back in case you need something tweaked for your application.
I've been happy with mine so far.

I'll second Powerjection, I have had the PJIII for 3 years and it has been pretty problem free. Had to replace a TPS, was a breeze to troubleshoot with the program. My ECM let the magic smoke out a week ago so I replaced my old CPU with a new version and it runs even better. New one also has spark control if you want to use it. The post mortem isn't done yet o the old one, apparently only had 2 smoke since release per vendor.

fieldsken1 and bret,
are you running this on a 2F engine? i cant find any info on this application. i am reqlly interested in this as i run above 7000' regularly and the aisin carb just boggs down. i am hoping/thinking a tbi will help with this.

thanks
andy

I will mention the megasquirt. It's cheaper than the others and allows for all kinds of mods and tuning. However, it is definitely not an easy install.

On a SBC, but with a square bore carb adapter I am confident it would do well. If you swing by It would be easy to demo. (Kinda)

I have a 350 that was carb'd but I just picked upped an AFI, I see y'all talking about just putting the ecu in the engine bay is this ok. I do trail riding and occasionally go thru water. It would be nice not to cut some holes in the fire wall to pass through the cables. Thanks

I'm also interested in this, but I believe there are waterproof ECUs and ones that are not. Looks like I might be getting a L33 and I'm curious if its ECU is waterproof.

I have the old downey kit on my 2f I bought used for 300 bucks which uses alot of gm stuff. The down side is it didn't have a included speed sensor. So the idle is a little funny sometimes. My cruiser has been in storage for a while, but I think with a speed sensor it would really make it smooth. Mileage is around 15mpg. I put the computer in the glove box but its mounted on the top inside so its pretty high and would only get water in it if you really really got stuck in deep water. But its a 20yr old ecm so their cheap to find in a junk yard. And I have extra chips and a programmer if I need to make a duplicate program. You could ask howell to make you an extra chip just in case and hang on to it. At this point Im just not sure how much more I want to mess with the 2f, I want more power. But if you still have a carb...ya you need to do something, I messed with my stupid carb for years in Colorado, huge waste of time, wish I bought efi as one of my first mods along with power steering.
