So do 255/85 give same ground clearance as 285/75?
Better wording, do they both end up being around 33/34-ish diameter?

They look better than I expected. Are you running spacers of any kind?
No. I do not run spacers and I am using the factory 16x8 wheels.

Both tire sizes are roughly the same height around 33". The second list @joshuaham posted compares the manufactured sizes.

Slightly better clearance with 255. Most 255s measure between 33.1” and 33.4” diameter, so a true 33. In contrast, most 285s measure between 32.5” and 32.8” diameter. BFG true size is typically smaller than most other major brands.

I love tall and skinny tire as the 255/85.

I had 255/85 Toyo MT on my overland equiped 60 and was torn when it come to buy tire for my 100.

The Toyo MT went from 19/32 to 7/32 in 22 000 miles which is not that much.

I put this on the weight of my 60 (6900) and all the rough back country road I drove.

Since my 100 weight 7400, I chose 285/75 but willing to try 255/85 again.

I might think the 255 is too narrow to support all the weight of the 100 so they wear out too fast.

Can some one comment this hypothesis ?

I run 235/85 R16 Cooper Discoverer AT3 LTs (load range E) on 16x6 rims on my 100, and have about 20k on them. They look new. So I don't think skinny tires can't stand up to the 100s weight.

Love them on and off road--last week at Fall Crawl in VA, the folks I was off-road with were amazed at how well they did (15 psi).

Wish they--or tires like them--were available in 255/85; I'd love a bit more clearance, but don't want people to hear my tires humming from 1/4 mile away. . .

And for those of you with tire size comparison questions, if you aren't familiar with the wonders of tiresize.com, get on over there. It's so much fun.

That is a nice benefit!

hi, what pressure are you running on you 255/85R16. i am getting very uneven wear on all 4 wheels. the suspensing was checked out and everything seems fine. wondering if it is the tyre pressure?

I am running 34psi.

I am running 34psi.

I'm running 40 psi on my KM3s mileage is better, ride a little harsher. I air down to about 25 off road if it's anything serious.

The toyo open co mt are mounted up and wayyy quiet compared to the worn out cooler stmaxx. I'm mean wow quiet. Super aggressive. They have a little more give than the cooper less taught. So hard corners are a little softer. Taller for sure at 33.5" as they take a little quickness out of the pig. I run a little slower on the freeway now to keep her from down shifting. 76 instead of 80. I'm totally happy as I wanted a more aggressive tire. Barely fits in the garage, like less than an inch with ironman performance lift. Much taller. As a hunting rig I pull into ditchs on side of Forrest service roads a lot to park. Zero slippage in high , never need low range or lock now. Used to spin quite a bit and at least engaged center. Would do again in a heart beat, I'm about 500 miles in

I just bought an early Christmas present for myself, a new set of 255/85/16 ST Maxx. My initial drive confirmed a more nimble driving experience than my old 285/75/16 AT3s. I'm also very impressed by the quiet highway ride.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they cost you? They seem to be going to about $260 a tire everywhere I've looked. (For a cheapskate like me that's a lot, lol)

Agreed, it's expensive. I paid $247/tire at Discount Tire in Cottonwood. They were at $262, but I got a quote from Big O for $249 and somehow they ended up at $247 after "matching the price". I bought 5 tires, ended up out the door at $1486.75 (includes tax, install, lifetime rotation and balance). I'm very happy with the purchase.
