So, I've decided to keep Jethro and this thread alive. Thanks again for all the support, I've just not been able to take advantage of it until now. I still have some challenges. For example, this is my workshop...
Sooo, it might still be a little while before I dig in. But this is what I've done since I last questioned the sanity of keeping it:
1. Tried to sell it twice and backed out both times. I just can't do it.
2. Jake in Heber worked on it and made some improvements, but it still lopes at idle, something wrong with the vacuum.
3. Found a vacuum leak at the base of the carb and replaced that plate with a new one. Still surging.
4. Worked on it with my second son, but it's a bit overwhelming to turn it over to him when I'm not around to help. We have a mechanic friend who teaches auto shop at a high school in the area that was coming over to help, but his time is limited too.
5. Tried emissions and it failed miserably.
6. My oldest son wrecked our ugly 80 and I bought a less ugly 80 to replace it.
7. Joined Wasatch Cruisers and went on my first trail run in January, met some great folks. Planning on attending a meeting this week and hopefully the February open run as well. Ben (2nd son) loved Ole' Blue at the January run and REALLY wants to get Jethro running so he can drive it and join the club too.
7. Got my Vintage plates so I'm not subject to emissions testing. Now I can at least drive it to events and mechanics and get help.
So, recognizing I won't be turning wrenches until the thaw, I'm looking for some advice so I can start planning. I see two options:
1. Put all the smog related parts back on (Jake gave me a working smog pump and I kept all the parts from my desmog efforts. I would need to modify my air filter housing as the smog pump port is welded over), and try to get it running smoothly again. It ran well before the smog pump seized. I could get it to pass emissions...Maybe...And it could be a daily driver. And I'd fight the emissions demons annually...In January.
2. Go full on desmog. The disadvantage to this is that I would keep my Vintage plates, which means that technically it can't be a daily driver. It seems there are about a dozen different ways to doing it, I just need one that works.
Either way I'm going to need help. It exceeds my current skills.
Which direction do you think will result in the best running vehicle?
If I want to really understand where the problems are I feel like I should do some thorough testing and baseline it. Where do I start with that? I'm thinking:
1. Compression tests
2. Smoke test on the vacuum
3. Check all engine electrical and make sure it's at spec
4. Report back here
5. What else?
Thanks! I plan to just keep everything in this thread for continuity.
