What's up dude don't give up.
I'm Micah and I'm vp of wasatch cruisers.

We are a local Club and would love to use your rig as one of our monthly tech nights. This would get 10 to 20 cruiser heads to help. Including kurt Williams the owner of cruiser outfitters. If nothing else call kurt Www.cruiseroutfitters.com

I live in Lehi and work in Taylorsville. There are a ton of us around.

Call me 8018245099.

That's quite an offer right there...

I was telling my son about the posts on here and how it would be a father / Son time. I said, "Think about it Jake, the time we spend together now on the weekends when I'm home we could spend working on the 60..." and he interrupted and said, "...making it worse...".

Oh he of little faith...well, it sounds like the right contacts are in place now...

Dude that's awesome. My name is also Jake, I am in Ogden and need to start getting involved with the local Cruiser heads. I would love to come help and learn. Keep the cruiser!

You really don't find support like this many places. I am grateful.

Jake come on out
We have our next meeting Thursday at Larry h Miller toyota on state street and 5500 s. (The Miller family kinda like cruisers)

We are working on keeping some trails here open. But it would be fun to meet. Call me anytime. 8018245099

You guys are excellent! I called all over the valley...well, from Layton to Sandy, trying to find a mechanic that would help me when it wouldn't run and needed carb work. It sat for almost a year as I tried to figure out what I was going to do with it. When I finally did find a mechanic he charged me an arm and a leg and gave me a shoddy result. I would love to bring it to tech night and learn from cruiser heads! I will re-arrange my travel schedule for work to be there!

So, I'm in and so are my boys. My 17 year-old daughter said, "If you do all that, I might want the 60 instead of the 80 when I go to school!" Good luck with that!

Thanks!

Lol, I have a 19 and 16 year old and they both claim Scarlett. I tell them to find there own and we will rebuild it

MicahMan, thanks for the invitation! It sounds great, unfortunately won't be able to make this week. How often do these meets happen? I will call you.

I just posted on rivesci's thread gossamer the red monster about the army green fj seeing it there in the driveway along side his 60,and now I see a silver in your driveway as well. Lol, this brings back memories of my silver fj that I had prior to my army green, lol.

Hey! Thanks again for all the support on here. I won't be able to make it to the WC Meetup this coming Thursday and couldn't wait 2 months to not make it to the next one. I did sign up on the Wasatch Cruisers site and look forward to showing up to whatever I can.

Meanwhile, I met Jake, Doug, and Dylan today in Heber. Jake's collection of vehicles would make Redd Fox (Sanford and Son) proud! Everything has a purpose, but it may be unappreciated by the untrained eye... Or neighbor. It was truly mind blowing. I had the rare and coveted privilege of driving "Pig Town"... I have a lot to learn about driving apparently. It's a great machine! I think you 'operate' pig town, you don't just drive it.

Jethro is in good hands. My son Jake (aka: "Jake Dos" ) and I will come back soon and hopefully turn a wrench or two with Jake #1. Thanks for the ride down the mountain, Dylan. Good times!

the weather is good warming and I will be able to spend more time there as well. Good to meet you both and that Red Cruiser looks great.

Don't sell! As second owner of my '87 FJ60, which I bought in '92, I came close several times to selling it over the years. I finally pulled the trigger last year and set it up to keep for a long time. I couldn't be happier in my decision!

So, I've decided to keep Jethro and this thread alive. Thanks again for all the support, I've just not been able to take advantage of it until now. I still have some challenges. For example, this is my workshop...

Sooo, it might still be a little while before I dig in. But this is what I've done since I last questioned the sanity of keeping it:

1. Tried to sell it twice and backed out both times. I just can't do it.
2. Jake in Heber worked on it and made some improvements, but it still lopes at idle, something wrong with the vacuum.
3. Found a vacuum leak at the base of the carb and replaced that plate with a new one. Still surging.
4. Worked on it with my second son, but it's a bit overwhelming to turn it over to him when I'm not around to help. We have a mechanic friend who teaches auto shop at a high school in the area that was coming over to help, but his time is limited too.
5. Tried emissions and it failed miserably.
6. My oldest son wrecked our ugly 80 and I bought a less ugly 80 to replace it.
7. Joined Wasatch Cruisers and went on my first trail run in January, met some great folks. Planning on attending a meeting this week and hopefully the February open run as well. Ben (2nd son) loved Ole' Blue at the January run and REALLY wants to get Jethro running so he can drive it and join the club too.
7. Got my Vintage plates so I'm not subject to emissions testing. Now I can at least drive it to events and mechanics and get help.

So, recognizing I won't be turning wrenches until the thaw, I'm looking for some advice so I can start planning. I see two options:

1. Put all the smog related parts back on (Jake gave me a working smog pump and I kept all the parts from my desmog efforts. I would need to modify my air filter housing as the smog pump port is welded over), and try to get it running smoothly again. It ran well before the smog pump seized. I could get it to pass emissions...Maybe...And it could be a daily driver. And I'd fight the emissions demons annually...In January.

2. Go full on desmog. The disadvantage to this is that I would keep my Vintage plates, which means that technically it can't be a daily driver. It seems there are about a dozen different ways to doing it, I just need one that works.

Either way I'm going to need help. It exceeds my current skills.
Which direction do you think will result in the best running vehicle?
If I want to really understand where the problems are I feel like I should do some thorough testing and baseline it. Where do I start with that? I'm thinking:

1. Compression tests
2. Smoke test on the vacuum
3. Check all engine electrical and make sure it's at spec
4. Report back here
5. What else?

Thanks! I plan to just keep everything in this thread for continuity.

When I moved from CA to WA. I desmoged my 60 and the change in driveability and performance blew my mind. If you can go that route it wil probably make your life easier in the long run with emissions demons.

What route did you take? Different carb and headers? Trollhole carb? Other solution?

Rebuilt Stock Carb by Mark's Off Road, Dizzy recurve by Jim C, Tri-Y headers, 2.5 in exhaust with cat delete.

When I pulled off my air rail there were multiple pin holes in it which after removing had me wondering if there would have been any way to get it to run well. I also had a crack in my intake manifold, when I looked into separating them and having it welded, replace all the horn rings and having the surfaces machined flat the cost came out to be close with buying headers and having the mild performance gains so I went that direction.

There are a few photos in my media which might give you an idea.

Yeah, I have a hard time spending good money on this anymore. I've put $3k in it and it still doesn't run right. Mines got a rough body, so the way I try to see it is anything I do mechanically to this one is actually an investment in my next one. I'd like to maintain this one until my kids are gone and done wrecking my car's. Then (or sometime between now and then when the money is good) get one with a better body and use this one for parts.

It looks great!
Edit: I really like the orange vacuum line. It makes it easy to see what your working with and it pops in the pictures. Almost like you did it on purpose just to help people like me. Thanks!

I'm guessing that whole thing came in around $3k?
