$2k + a Land Cruiser + Tools = All the lessons your boy needs to learn for a successful and prosperous life!

Seriously, follow @mcguirejohnson footsteps and advice. His cruiser has prepared him more for life than most textbooks ever could. Give your boy the same opportunity. Most kids are waiting for their parents to hand them the keys to a car, but few can put in the work to make their own ride happen.

I did all the work myself. But if you had a shop do the work it would prob be 3k. What I've done has been a slow process but I want to do the work myself because I like the project aspect of it. Here is a breakdown on the parts/work cost so far.

Carb rebuild - around $450 with rebuild and new gaskets / shipping
Headers - $400 bought used from Mark's Off Road, got them sandblasted and welded
Exhaust - Had a shop do this for $300 with a new muffler in the mix.
Dizzy recurve - $200 Jim C

Vac lines are silicon tube from Boostcontroller.com 3mm and 5mm lines. I picked red because it matched the car and like you said it made it easier to see.

When they rebuilt the carb did they do anything special, like bypass or plug any ports, or just rebuild? I had mine rebuilt not many miles ago.

I would do what I can myself also. I can't weld (yet), but I can take stuff off and put it back on. :)

Thanks for the numbers and sources, that helps.

I'm in the same boat, very minimal welding experience and no equipment. I took it to a welding shop local to me and for $75 they laid a thick bead around the mounting flange in order to ensure a solid seal.

Keep asking questions, there is a tremendous amount of knowledge on this forum.

To my knowledge Mark didn't block anything, when you desmog you remove vac lines from the carb and plug them with caps. I'm not sure if that is what you may be thinking of.

I did take it in to the local crusier shop (Torfab) and the adjusted the valves, checked the timing, and tuned the carb. They also gave me a write-up of all the things they diagnosed. I was struggling to get the lean drop carb adjustment, cost $400 for them to do everything and it was completely worth it in my opinion.

If your local to Crusier Outfitters you might reach out to them and see if they would take a look over for and what the would prob cost.
