it has been doing this since the h/g job and it bugs me. I have to crank it for too long. Sometimes it fires as I release the starter. what would do this?

Cracked air intake hose? Bad connection somewhere?

Tough to say ~ lots of variables to look at. Might be totally unrelated to HG, which may make it harder to diagnose. Or easier. Or the same.

I'm no help.

Hey,
I had this SAME PROBLEM on my 62...check the air intake hose really good for leaks.
Mine was acting up before my DV trip, and on the trip with all the flex, it just cracked WIDE OPEN!
Duct taped it and she did fine after that. Id start there!
Hope this helps...

Mine had the same symptoms for quite a while, as well as a slightly low slightly rough idle. It turned out to be the intake hose. Mine had no cracks, but had just gotten so hard that the rubber would not completely seal at the ends. Ditching the toyota clamps for a set of solid metal banded t-bar clamps from the boat box cleared everything up.
