Has anyone tried WARN's Tabor winch. Supposedly it's there budget line. The 9000lb winch runs $489. Which would leave me some extra cash to put towards a custom rear bumper:bounce:

For not much more $$, you can get a Warn M8000. It isn't sexy, but it's plenty of winch for an FJC. The Tabor stuff is to compete with the cheap Chinese winches like T-Max and Milemarker. Get a real winch if you need a winch, otherwise, spend your $ elsewhere.

Are you sure you want to take a new $30k vehicle into a place where you need a winch?

TMax is actually an Aussie winch....and the 10k I've got on my 80-series performed just dandy this past week at GSMTR.

I've yet to be impressed with the MM winches tho...and there are some other knockoffs that aren't all that great either.

VERY pleased with my Warn 8274-50 on my FJ40, it's by far the fastest winch avail...

I just can't picture an 8274 on an FJC.

Should not need a winch at the mall....

I suppose, but while it's new and nice, I would stick to fireroads and "expedition" type trails where you would not be as likely to damage it. There is a lot of backcountry to see without too seriously taxing the capibilities of the FJC.

My perspective is that I get offroad at least once per month, and have "needed"(as in no other solution) a winch only 3 times in 5 years. All 3 were in places I would never take a new vehicle. Places like the Rubicon and other more difficult trails, while possible in an FJC, will eventually cause significant damage, especially to the sheet metal. It's part of the game and normal. If you can afford it, and want to risk that kind of damage in a new vehicle, then go for it.

I've seen one or two and they cut corners on some areas but the internals look the same. The little levers and such are chinese made crap but can be replaced by the higher quality warn equivelant.

Even expedition driving can lead to situations where a winch is usefull.
Clearing a fallen tree from the trail rather than backtracking miles.
Getting out of the ditch you slid into on a muddy/snowy road.

Or just getting out of a stupid mistake.

I guess we agree then. He should buy a real winch. If you can afford to wheel a new truck, you can afford a nice winch. Definitely not a place to cut corners.:D

The Tabor winches are made in the USA, not China like the Tmax and the mm electric winches. I have a Tabor 9000 and used it quite a lot at the GSMTR. I am very pleased with it's performance and the price.

What's the warranty on the Tabor? I can't imagine if Warn is putting their name on it that it's that bad. Hell of a lot cheaper.

Warn has been putting their name on crap for years, now they have an 'entry level' product which supposedly is inferior to the M series which has now been dubbed 'heavy duty'. There was a time when the 8274 was entry level and also a lifetime investment. Now users are expected to make do with a winch that the manufacturer doesn't trust past the first year. <edit, 90 days for the electrics> I can't find any specs on the Warn site for these winches however they do show a line speed vs motor draw table for all their other lines. I found a table on one of the venders sites showing the 9K drawing over 500 Amps at its max 4500lb pull at 6 ft/min. Is this accurate? I haven't found a claim by Warn that the 9K actually pulls 9000 lbs as one might be inclined to believe.

I guess the way I look at it is if I buy a truck with offroad capability why wouldn't I use it offroad? What, I should "save" it until the book value drops below some number?

Stick with WARN, if they are selling the Tabor for a reduced cost there is a reason! (ie: cheaper parts, casings, gears, etc...) And as always, you get what you pay for :)

Good luck!

mmm.... this may well be the case for this item, but I would take exception with the statement in general. Wouldn't be the first time that some similar items are sold at vastly different prices because of marketing and counting on unknowledgeable buyers...

I would look some more into it if I were really interested. For that matter, in fact I did some time back, I asked the Warn tech what the tech differences were between Tabor and rest of the line and what the life expectancy difference should be. Obviously, he couldn't have said they were the same even if they were so that is a bit iffy of a question. But I also did not get a clean answer as to what the differences were. Was very muddied. Nothing like bushings vs bearins or anything like that.... Some mumblings as to some vague differences....

Having said that, if I had the money to buy a winch, I'd probably buy the regular Warn, mostly on the basis that I'd get more $$ back when selling it so it may come out as a wash after a while.

BigBlue,

Go for the Warn winch. On La Cabra I've got a M8000 and I'm very happy with it. I've used it maybe 10 times, but it has been a real time saver every time. It's not too expensive and it works.

Regards

Alvaro

PD: Eric, if you had a winch on your cruiser, where would you take it that you don't take it now?
