HI all,

Fixing leaks as I find them. Replaced pinion seal on rear diif which was leaking. Now the other end of the driveshaft - the oil seal in the transfer case appears to be leaking. When I opened the fill hole on the Transmission first to check the level and see if I need to do the hose mod too, about 1/2cup of oil dribbled out. Then when I opened the t-case fill hole about 3-5 oz dripped out. Truck was in the garage on a level floor not jacked up at all.
My question is - is it possible the t-case was overfilled by the PO and if so would that cause the oil seal to the rear driveshaft to leak? Also I have read a lot about the seal between the tranny and the t-case and the hose mod. What is the symptom(s) of one needing to do the hose mod between the two? Thanks in advance. Anyone know what an oil seal should cost?

I don't understand. 1/2 cup = four ounces. So you got 4 ounces out of the transmsission and 4 ounces out of the transfer case? Was the oil hot or cold? depending upon how you fill the cases it's possible to get it full enough that it dribbles out the next time you remove the fill plugs.

The bypass hose fixes the problem when the seal between the transfer case and trasmission starts to go and the rotating gears in the transfer case pump the oil into the transmission. The symptom is that the transmission is over full and the transfer case is under full. The hose allows the oil to flow from the transmission back down to the transfer case.

I don't think that a 1/2 cup of extra oil should cause the rear output seal to leak. Most likely the seal is worn. If both pinion and transfer case seals are bad, it could be just bad luck, but maybe your driveshaft is out of balance or out of phase, causing excess driveshaft vibration.

if and when you do replace the tc output seal. make sure you also silicone the splines where the yoke slides on. i usually let the silicone set up for 12-24 hours before i add any fluids.

Thanks guys!

Ok I will do the TC seal today if NAPA has one. The oil was warm when I pulled the plugs. What is gained by silicone on the splines of the yoke?

I think the rig sitting for 2-3 years outside thru Wyoming winters really reeked havoc with a lot of the seals on the undercarriage. Being buried in ice and snow for 4-5 months at a time is tough on anythign plastic or rubber.

Thanks again. I could not ride tihs rig without this forum! ;)

the fluid in the t-case can and will creep along the splines of the output shaft causing a leak. a little silicone on the splines will prevent that.

as for the oil levels in both units, fill them to the proper level and then check them again after a week and after a month. that should tell you what's going on in there. the tc input seal might be old and letting some fluid by.
