I hate to sound like an info-mercial but I've never had an engine respond so well to an oil change as this 4.7L V-8. Smooth as silk & seemingly more power. Running 10W30 full synthetic. Enuf said -- go ahead and flame me now. :o

Yea I noticed the same thing...it's probably my imagination...I run 5W30 Amsoil...seems to run smoother to me: Probably nothing more than an expensive imagination!

All I'm going say... have you ever seen the difference when burning synthetic vs. petrolium based oil in a 2-stroke engine? I realize this isn't a good comparison, but until synthetics were on the planet, petrol mix in a 2-stroke was very hard on plugs with excessive carbon build up in the combustion chamber.

i saw a demostration of common syn oils and royal purple. this was at a convention held by NAPA, (non public. Royal Purple guy was thers. he had this jig thing that exerted extreme pressure and friction on a bearing.
royal purple out performed every oil he had used to compare.
like mobil, castrol.....
so if you think your enginge works better now, (which im sure it does :D) wait till you use Royal Purple...

I saw David Blaine go through a solid pane of glass :)

Royal Purple is good stuff. I did some promotional stuff with them when I lived in Houston and was very impressed with the whole outfit. There are rumors that the overall performance is great but consistency (not thickness but repeatability) is not quite there. This is based on nothing but rumors though. :D Their bread and butter is in racing applications for the most part which demands that it be good stuff IMO.

Right now I'm getting 12-14k mile OCI's on M1 and M1 filters and blackstone says I can go longer so I really have no desire to change to anything else.

I agree with you why use anything but M1, get it anywhere and it's not as high as the designer/low production brands plus it does more then any of us ever need from an oil.

I have been using Mobil 1 for many years now and have just recently tried Royal Purple because of the good reviews and it was being stocked at my local Pepboys.

I can't tell you if it is any better or any worse than M1 but it does make my engine sound different. The sound difference is obviously difficult to describe in words but I can say that it sounds smoother. Whether that is a bad or good thing I don't know, but the bottom line is that I will use Royal Purple again.

Isn't there a mileage limit for switching over to synthetic? Or is that false?

I thought I heard once that it can be bad for seals and stuff if you switch to synthetic past 80k or 90k miles.

Just wondering since my first oil change is coming up and I want to go with synthetic on my 90k mile 100.

What I did was first use mobil clean 7500 (a synthetic blend) for 3K miles and then use M1.

Not a problem, but for more info go here and ask the experts www.bobistheoilguy.com

I'm doing 10k changes of my Mobil 1 full synthetic and Mobil 1 (M1-209) filter. 10k is easy for my to remember:doh:

We've talked about this in another thread before but it is worth mentioning again. The M1-209 filter will fit the stock location and it is bigger than the one they list for the 4.7L. The specifications are the same too.

The Mobil 1 M-209 filter crosses-references to an Amsoil EaO34. I'm still using up a stockpile of the SDF-57 filters but will switch to the larger nano-filter when I run out.

A related question: Our LX doesn't get used a lot in the summer (biking to work), only for outings. I'm using M1 5W30 with a stock oil filter because it is the same filter as on my LS400 so I buy them by the dozen.

Is there a maximum time between oil changes that you would recommend for this oil/filter combination provided that I stay below 5 to 8 k-miles?

Thanks

Call them at 1-800- ask-mobil1, they are very helpful on the phone. I have called them many times and they really know their stuff.

I wouldn't hesitate at all to change only once a year at only 8k a year. You can always find out by sending in a sample at the end of the year to a lab and see how the results are. You should be theoretically able to run the oil as long as the properties of said oil stay in check.
