Swing out spare tire carrier? (1 Viewer)

I love the idea of the Prado back door. I looked into it a bunch when i had my GX470s. -- sadly, those ones suffer from hinge/body cracking issues so its not a great mod for GX470s.

However, the 150 Prado rear door doesn't seem to suffer the same hinge/body crack issues.

But... one of the BEST upgrades Toyota/Lexus did on the 150/GX460 is the pop open rear window. Those 150 Prado doors with the tire-carrier built in do not have the pop open rear window option. I personally would be really sad to lose that. :(

Though I guess one could reason that you most likely aren't opening that rear window with ANY tire carrier (unless the tire hangs reeeeaaallly low or really far back) in the "closed" position, and if you have to open the tire carrier to pop/fully open the window, well, then its not much different than just opening the whole door at that point. :hmm:
I have the MetalTech swing-out spare tire with dual jerry cans and we use the the flip up rear window when we need to bring a longboard (surfboard) that hangs out about a foot, resting on top of the spare.
Note, I do have to open the swing out with the rear door closed to open the glass and then I have to trip the latch with a key (or anything that will fit in there) or you'll get the ding-ding-ding when driving. I wouldn't travel very far but the few miles we go on the freeway to some of the other local surf spots, is fine.
Also, no noticeable fumes or "buzz" from exhaust.

Swing out without aux fank are 95% for fashion statement.

GX AWD are technically 3 open diff and would not lockup/grenade like AWD system that use viscous coupling. It might impact VSC performance, but would not damage drivetrain mechanical parts.
Locking the diff off road are not an issue with one smaller tire.

Bring glutread sidewall repair patch and run 255/75R17 spare in stock locations.

Interesting indeed... can others expand on this approach?

Would love to run 33's on my 150 without the requirement of a swing out /new door. I had dual swingouts on my 100 and it became a hassle day-to-day.

Should work in theory. Certain 32s have been stuffed up there. Getting a cheap "just get it home" 255/70R18 wouldn't really be out of the question if you wanted to mount it to a factory rim either. People get KDSS spacers to also help with spare fitment.

maybe I should have a used KO2 test fitted up there... cheap insurance compared to my unusable OEM spare for sure.

thoughts? 2% ain't bad.

.65 / 2 =.33 or roughly 10/32"

That's like the difference of a worn tire and a new tire on the same axle. For something just as a spare that's more than usable.

Wellllll, what are ya wait'n for yammering on here! Get'er on and get some pic's posted!!!! ;)
🤣

Sliders got painted and installed this weekend. I’m going to prep and try painting the tire carrier during the week but won’t be able to install it since we’re gone next weekend.

Also, aren't you getting some weather up there right about now? Kills trying to paint in cold weather.

I keep waffling between the Prado door swap mount, a homebuilt swingout integrated into the door like an Exp One, or the JW. I think I'm settling on the JW, mostly due to @Roody's experience with it: Builds - Roody’s 2018 Lexus GX460 Build, Adventure, and Hooniverse Podcast - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/roodys-2018-lexus-gx460-build-adventure-and-hooniverse-podcast.1302517/post-14981223

I don't want to lose the pop-out window if you switch to the Prado door, and building one that's properly engineered is out of my capability right now. So it comes to the JW - and at least I have a welder and some basic capability to reinforce/repair as I need. But it's a solution for now.

Installed yesterday. Cutting the bumper was sketchy 🤣. Overall it was a simple install and looks clean. I messed up at first by pressing the bearing seal too far in. I reached out to ROF and they responded right away and told me how to fix my small mistake. Highly recommend them.
