I've seen the ones from Rockstomper.com but they're a little too tall (http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm) . I'd like to hear how some of you folks are making the hinge? I was hoping to make a greaseable but shorter piece.

Thanks.

Ali

Don't know if you've alredy seen it, but Slee sells a spindle assembly for the do-it-yourself approach.

I just asked basically the same thing with no replies. i know about the hing, but how do you mount it in the plastic corner piece of the stock rear bumper?

sorry, hinge (spelling sucks)

You would need to fabricate a mount under the end. You are thinking of the Kamar carrier. Pictures of one were recently posted. Do a search in 80's for tire carrier or Kamar.

If you 're sticking with the stock bumper and plastic end caps, then take a look at a Kaymar swing away tire carrier thing to get an idea. There is a good picture on the ManAfree site. Basically, you'll have to add some structural material under the plastic end caps that will support the tire carrier.

You can get a spindle from a trailer supply place. One of the guys I know got like a 10k lb. one for around $40 IIRC. Then you'd need to do like the others are saying and fab a mounting point for it.

Like this. So i'll need to take the end plastic piece off (i know that much allready) and then what, weld a metal bracket under there some place to weld the spindle to?

or this. What's supporting the spindle?

CJ,

You're on the right track. Another member posted detail pictures of how the Kaymar is braced underneath the plastic piece. Keep searching and you will be rewarded with the information you're seeking. Let me know if you hit a dead end and I'll assist with the search. I know it sucks but it's one of those things that you kinda learn to use with time and practice.

Later...
Here is the thread with the pics that I was talking about.

Sorry guys, i was confused yesterday. I thought that when you all said kaymar you meant the entire rear bumper. I thought that swing out tire carrier, spindle and all, was fabricated from parts picked up at slee's sight, local hardware stores, and a little welding. My appologies.

That stuff is pricey don't you think? :-[ And, out of stock! >:(

Yeah, it's a bit pricey to say the least. Something like $500 for the carrier alone! You can try to fab up something like that I guess but it sure makes it easier if you have a solid bumper as a foundation to work off of.

I am the one who posted pics of my Kaymar tire carrier. Do a search for my posts..

The Kaymar OEM bumper tire carrier :
$515 from Man-a-Fre.com

The Kaymar bumper w/tire carrier: $1200+

I opted for just the tire carrier for 2 reasons..1. hell of a lot cheaper than the entire bumper setup. 2. it was basically a bolt-n-go project. No designing..no welding. Easy.

The Kaymar OEM bumper tire carrier uses a bracket (refer to man-a-fre site..it is the gold colored big bracket) that bolts to exitsing holes in the frame...and this bracket is UNDERNEATH the grey rear bumper plastic corner.
The 'gold' internal backet then supports (through the use of bolts) an external 'black' bracket that wraps around the outside of the gray plastic corner piece.

Both the internal gold bracket AND the external black bracket work in conjunction to give support to the tire carrier.

It looks like the actual tire carrier is a generic kaymar tirecarrier...same one that is used on the kaymar bumpers.

The entire package fit my 96 perfectly. There were no issues with having to grind anything to make something fit..or monkeying around. It was perfect.

If you like..i can post all my pics that i took of the process..it might take a few days but let me know if you want me to .

later..

Include some photos of my 'current' setup.
I was approx $120 from a welding shop that did agri/tractor repair. The spindle has no bearings and is just solid metal within a tube. It hangs too low and takes a lot of bangs (but is held to the frame very solidly).
Should cut about 2" off the end of the tube/spindle.
Eventually looking to fab a complete rear bumper.

However for the price I'm happy with the result I got (2 yrs going now).

Is that a gas tank under there?

thanks for the pics. I'm waiting for some warmer weather before the attempt is made. Just trying to work out most of the bugs out in my head before i start.

Alia,
They are two LPG/propane tanls. Total of 100 litres useable. Not using much here in Colorado (used 99% in UK :) as propane prices are higher than unleaded.
