I'm daydreaming about a (small) wheeling rig. I'm in the US. Thinking about weight for towing calculations.
(Let's not talk about any functionality differences between the 70, 40 and mini truck...)
What are the weights of the SWB 70 series trucks in the 1991-1994 year range? What would be the lightest option?
(If there is a specs reference point me there and I'll do the rest myself)

Actual measured axle weights of Ziplock the BJ74, on the way home from a week off-road, fully laden with tools, spares, two fridges, camping gear, etc etc
1340 kg front axle
1930 rear axle
3270 combined
I believe the curb weight rating for this truck was about 1800kg.

I'm thinking a trailer queen carrying as little as possible, especially when on the trailer! (Yeah, I want to tow this with a rig not rated for towing 8000lbs)

Your thread title is the right order weight wise.

If you learn to wheel without breaking things, you could drive your vehicle to and from the event 🤣

Seriously, 4K lbs to 5K lbs for the vehicle and another 1K for the junk you will haul with it, so 6,000 lbs.

Add the trailer and you are up around 8,000 lbs.

What are you looking at for a tow vehicle? Brian will sell you his GMC.

First I'm thinking the rock crawler it would be minimalist in that it wouldn't carry any non-essentials. Just enough for a day in the woods.
For a tow rig I would like that to be my "expedition" rig (also minimalist - not going whole hog overlander)... think 70 series Troopy or, if the stars align, FJ45LV with FF rear, disc brakes, v8 powered.

I've never put it on a scale, but from doing spring rate calculations, I know that the sprung mass of the 73 in my signature is close to 4000lb. Add in the unsprung tires and axles, and total weight is probably closer to 5000lb. A SWB truck would be a bit lighter, but that is offset by the heavier engine post '90. Most built minis/4Runners are around 4000lb.

70 crawlers are cool, but minis and 4Runners are far more practical trail rigs for a variety of reasons. If you are going to build a 70 series, I would recommend a 73/74 over a SWB model. The extra wheelbase is worth it for stability, IMO.

Is the 74series (medium wheelbases) same frame as lj71series (short wheelbase) with axle pushed back slightly??? (Similar to 40series and 43/44- i think the 43/44 axle is 5.7" further back and then some added frame length in rear.)

I concur. I think my lic papers said 1850kg tare. I think the 70 series would be close. The versality, size and road manners of the 73/74 series is way better than any other solid axle leaf sprung landcruiser. I think its 2 ft longer than a 40 from guesstimates based on parking them together.

The 73/74 is about 11" longer in total than the 70/71 and all of the added length happens between the wheels/wheelbase. Rear overhang is the same.

What @hoser just said has been my observation exactly between the FJ73 I had and my current PZJ70.

Those 11" extra may not seem like a lot but you really can feel it in the rear cargo area if you sit back there or carry something.

Also the frame is different. The rear shock mount locations on the FJ73 are not the same as they are on my PZJ70.

In my opinion you will not beat the mini truck for off-roading. In particular for rock crawling. Cheap, easy to build, very capable and light weight.

Cheers
