Anyone else see this auction? Can't believe what someone just paid for this 100 series!

This one too:

They both seem high to me.... What do you guys think? Lookin like BAT might be the best place to sell your 100. This LX470 is currently listed if you want to watch another one. If you haven't yet found this website then I apologize for your new addiction

Those valuations are because of the seller. He is worshiped on that site. Just review his transaction history and sales comments.

He does a great job, no doubt about it!

This is coming from a multiple car buyer on that site and just missing out on one of his AMGs.

I think you just hit the nail on the head. For some reason people are over valuing these cars based on the seller. Some shlub like me probably wouldn't get that much for a rusty 100 series.... BUT only one way to find out. If I hadn't sold my (non-rusty and fairly nice) 2000 LC on craigslist a few months ago I would certainly test this theory on BAT. That silver 1999 that went for $15k is absurd!

Bruce_M has been around for many many years. So, @shellb and @LandyAndy are right on. I remember Bruce from my Audi days in the early 2000's. He was an Audiworld/Quattroworld legend. He was selling hot/flipped/resell cars even then. He's got a knack for it...for better or for worse. He's crazy knowledgeable about many platforms, and puts in a lot of work for his "customers". So, he's earned his reputation.

Personally, BaT doesn't provide an accurate depiction of actual values. HOWEVER, it does represent a segment of the market, and if you're ever selling, you should consider the values there when pricing. You're not likely to get it, but they do serve to level out the average of highs and lows, which means you'll end up somewhere in the middle and get more than you possibly expected. My bigger issue is when people ONLY think about BaT in valuation. As if that's the be-all-end-all. It would be like relying on KBB or auction prices. They're not always realistic.

In the end, 1) I will give you my opinion on your pricing - but it's my opinion and like a-holes, we all have them, 2) if the buyer is happy with the price they paid, that's great, 3) if the seller is happy with the price they made, that's great, but 4) I don't have to like your pricing, and I will probably move on or complain like everyone else - it's why the internet was formed!

He does have a knack for it. He is flipping these for $5-9k profit on the LC/LXs. Usually does a bit better on the MBZs, though that market is really soft (at both auction & lately on BAT). He bought his current white BAT LX at wholesale auction for $11,900 on 3/26. BAT has a lot of shill bidders as well, and they certainly don't regulate it at all. They do regulate/moderate anyone who points out what the car previously sold for at an auction, unless it is to the seller's advantage (like a Sotheby's auction). I've bought projects on BAT, and sold there as well. I would never buy a LC/LX there....

This is unbelievable! $15K for this 1999! I sold a 1999 for $13.000 before the apocalypse Black with only 99K miles, Dissent aluminum bumper, Brand new wheels and tires

They seem to have moments of trying to regulate shills. The shill thing may have came to a head when the owner of the cobra that was a consignment bought his own car because the bids were not high enough. BAT got their money but a lot of real bidders made it known they were unhappy. The car hit a fair market price. Not what the seller expected.

That happens a lot more often than most people think.

Jordan Motorsports in Portland, OR has(d) a 99 for $19,990 with 249k miles. People are morons paying that, but to each their own.

Yes, the green one. I emailed an "Eric" four times asking for a price. I would only get auto responses saying "Give us a call..". Finally called two weeks later and he told me the price just shy of $20k. Ask if it was made of gold and he hung up. About to post it in the classified sections for others to see.

I think the moral of the story is that myth is turning into legend regarding 100 series capabilities and longevity. If you are thinking of cashing in as a current owner, it must be getting tempting.

2004 with 167k from Ohio hit $20k+ on BAT today.....good color & really clean, but seriously......

This forum is just funny to me. Everyone here talks about how great the 100s are but then act surprised when a clean one SELLS for good money.

logic would tell one paying $$$$ for $ is moronic. And so long as 100 fans view the platforms as some sort of gold standard, they’ll continue to sell for rediculous sums. And this is coming from someone who has made various purchases from 100’s, RRS, Disco4, and G platforms.

If one chooses to pay $15k above value, that’s on them. Can’t fix stupid.

The 100 was a huge step up over the 80. These "clean" ones are crusty underneath with a history from the rust belt. Not what I consider a top dollar candidate.

wait until a low mileage, rust free 06-07 pops up on BaT. People on this site will lose their mind at the final price and talk about how overpriced it was. Sorry folks, bringatrailer is an actual market with verifiable sales prices.

Yes, there are deals to be had but that doesn’t mean that every 100 should be cheap. There is a high demand for clean 100s as evidenced by recent sales prices.

I am curious as to whether the 100s will enter "speculator" status. I could see a mint, rust-free 60k mile example going for upper 20s in the next few months. It's good for me since I slightly overpaid for mine 3 years ago because it was almost perfectly mechanically cherry and the only rust issue was the upper tailgate. I could care less what the damn thing looks like.

The seller of the '02 LC on BaT that ended on 4/10 received a helping hand from BaT covering up some (planned, IMO) shill activity back in 2018.

These guys:

Were selling a 360 Modena and screwed up by posting a comment from a newly-created shill account thinking they were using the selling account. I screen grabbed it because BaT covers this stuff up very quickly and will delete anyone's comments which call it out.

Here's the vehicle:

Here's how the chat looked right after the seller screwed up:

And here it is after BaT quickly cleaned it up.

Here's the account (created same time as the auction went live)

Shill bidding is rampant on BaT. It's too cheap NOT to try it. The total vig is only 5% + $99.

WIth traditional auction houses it is a much more difficult affair (IMO) given that most bidders are "in the room."
And with a No Reserve consignment, it's going to cost you 20%+ to "buy" your own car if you don't like the bidding.

Full disclosure: My comments are subject to full moderation on BaT because they don't like the way I call stuff like this out. As I said, this stuff happens all the time.

IMO, as a small-time collector of Toyotas, I feel that the only 100s which will be "future collectibles" will be one of the following:

2006/07 model year Land Cruisers. Pristine condition with sub 100K miles. The unicorn of those in that sub group will be factory Nav-delete.
And then there are the early Land Cruisers. Extremely low miles. Rear locker.
Colors will matter. But not as much as condition.

I don't ever see any Lexus-branded SUV being "collectible."
