Does anyone have an opinion on installing a super charger for a 96 fj80 ? what other mods might be needed, ie: transmission  how's the mileage affected ?

just don't do it the way that Junk did :flipoff2: :D

Sorry doug, I don't understand "don't do it like that junk" ? Pete :)

Mine gets about 10 mpg no matter how I drive it, highway, around town, the thing is thirsty!

Story time.... We briefly owned our non-supercharged 94 and my supercharged 97 at the same time. I had been driving the 97 but one day it was blocked in so I took the 94. Driving down our street I shook my head at how stupid/absent minded I was, reached down to disengage the parking brake. It was already disengaged. Non-supercharged literally felt like I was driving with the brake on.

Expensive mod though that a lot of people say shouldn't be put on even moderately high mileage engines.

You'll get a lot of different opinions on this one. Try to drive one, that's the only way to really know if you want it.

Junk had some problems with his blower. His opinion of the S/C might be a bit jaded. I think he did or is going to remove his and sell it...so if you're in the market for one, you might want to hit him up.

Not to be an ass, but this has been covered quite a bit -- a quick search on the subject matter will turn up a ton of info.

thanks everyone ! How would I contact Junk about the SC to buy ? Will do the search again. Pete :)

Scroll through the Members List, locate Junk, send him a PM. Just to repeat...I don't know if he still has it, but he did not too long ago.

In a nutshell:

A kit costs 3 grand.

You MUST use premium fuel from then on.

Your mileage WILL NOT be better.

The additional power is very nice.

You should change the headgasket, replace the fan clutch and probably the radiator.

Remember: Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?

Milage won't be better? Sorry, but this must be a poorly designed supercharger. The extra power boost should more than offset the power loss from driving the fans. Especially at highway speeds, milage should definately increase.

So... milage is the same, and now I can't get away with cheap gas? Doesn't sound like something I want to do.

But Doc, you can mash the skinny petal and get er' done!

Can I get my mashed 'skinny pedal' with gravy?

No, for me at least 42.6% of the attraction was milage savings on long road trips (which I do frequently).

Not a chance.

I guess I'm still in the Honda midset- the typical supercharged Honda will recive on the aveage a 5-10% incrase in fuel economy when supercharged, more with a turbo.

I'd guess that if you were to drive you S/C'd truck exactly the same way you drive your stock truck (e.g., acceleration level, speed, etc.), you might see better milage. But the fact is, with that new-found power, you don't do this, and so you get the same or lower milage. I personally get about the same milage as I did before adding the S/C.

But you also have to consider what you're using it for. I tow a trailer with mine as often as I can :D . To do that without the S/C required a lot of driving at high revs unless I wanted to crawl. I didn't. So the S/C allows me to drive at good speed and low/normal revs, and all I have to do is feed it premium fuel. To me, that was a fair trade-off. For others it may not be.

Thanks, could you give me some info about the super charger you have ie'price who installed etc. ? It's nice to hear you have had good results. :)

Thanks Dan :) How much would the fan clutch, radiator and head gasket work cost ? :)

You guys are forgetting to mention all the fun gauges he'll need to buy :D

psj you really need to learn to use the search function. It is all out there in excruciating detail as to price and labour time. You could do the fan clutch and rad yourself. The h/g is doable too but many hours of your life.

I would do a compression check before I even considered this route. Then read up about what Dan puts in in his window washer fluid to make the s/c work mo better.

If you want more power another much cheaper route is some fancy head work (while doing the H/G). search on username Robbie to learn about his 4.7 litre ifze motor. If money is no object and you are handy search on the turbo conversion which many or most think is better than the s/c.

Sorry  I searched through 4 huge pages and didn't find the answers I needed, so I figued I would ask around, Thank for the info on the fan,rad and H/G. I will try some other seach words right now, but I'll warn you I'll be back if not :D :D Much appreciated !

Hey semlin, I just spent the last hour and a half searching robbies posts looking for the info you mentioned, nothing there ! I searched it to the best of my ability and couldn't find anything. Can you tell me where ? Are you sure about what you said.h
