Not quite sure if this is "techy" enough...might get moved to Chat, but...

I've had a sunbaked hood for quite a while now...three years ever since I received my BJ74 from Japan. Been contemplating on what to do with it, from repainting with colour match or just painting it flat black. Decided that I would try to Linex it instead.

Linex is a very tough polyurethane coating normally used for truck beds. It's harder than Rhinoline but still flexible. The reasons why I went with Linex are cost and durability. Repainting the hood in a body shop to colour match my truck would have cost a lot more, and painting it flat black from a rattle can just means that I'll be doing that every year or so. Also, I figure that since Linex is usually used as a truck bed liner, it's going to put up with a lot of abuse, and rock chips and branches are not going to be a problem.

Chris at Abbotsford Linex did an excellent job with my hood. I dropped it off and picked it up the next day on time. The colour matching (paint they use is Endura...excellent quality) is actually fairly close even though it doesn't appear that way in the picture...the texture of the Linex reflects light differently in bright sunlight. I'm very happy with the result...and if you have a sunbaked hood or roof, Linex might be an idea for a once in a lifetime fix. Might look great on the roof of your HJ61 Darryl (there should be a Line-X place in Kelowna)!

Not crazy about the look, but then I like nice shinny paint.....

I have heard its tough to keep clean with all the nooks and crannies.

Thanks guys...If you want plain black, it's around $110. Colour matching with Endura paint adds another $40 to the pricetag.

Rob, that's an interesting point. I'll monitor how hard it is to keep clean and get back to you guys about it. I figure it's no different than trying to keep it clean when it's sprayed on as a bedliner...and I haven't heard any bad things about that application.

Cheers.

Cool idea! I'll have to look into it this summer sometime. I'm guessing that for the roof on mine, they would just tape off a line similar to how they do it on the top of the pickup boxes..

So how long until we see you driving around with a transmission strapped to your hood? :)

He will really need the tranny strapped to the roof if he is going Landy, oh and some spare axles and a big box of Lucas electrical hardware:D

Looks, umm... interesting. I wonder how much dazzle you will get from the sun reflecting off the bumps everywhere back into your face. Oops, nevermind. I forgot that you don't get much there with all the rain. LOL

As for cleaning, you probably just need a big old nasty brush and some water. What, you think you are going to scratch it? You should so the whole thing and never worry about tree inflicted pinstriping ever again.

Umm, yeah...big words coming from someone who lives in DEADmonton, where the biggest attraction is Hooters at the West DEADmonton Mall. :flipoff2: I've been to your hood twice, and the second time I was on a business trip and was paid for my time...wouldn't have gone back a second time unless it was for business.

FYI...there isn't too much dazzle right now, it's grey, not chrome. And I am counting on it to dull somewhat over time, so that was factored in. Thanks for the input, hardcore.

Hey, don't knock The Mall. We got a larger submarine fleet than the Canadian navy.:D

I wonder if that stuff would hide rust bubbles. Not to sound like a smartass, but if a person used it on rockers or something would it hide rust starting until there was just a big hole under the Linex? And then what do you do, that stuff is murder to get off.

Kevin,
the stuff is great for pin striping by mother nature and if you do this to your entire truck then it isn't like you are trying to impress anyone. you are going practical vs pretty.
i would have no problem doing an entire bush rig in the stuff. when the rust is bad enough pitch it and buy an new truck. i have seen MANY people do this to hide rust on vehicles that are sold shortly there after.
as for the glare, i think you would end up with more glare from shiny paint or the chrome bush bar than from the hood...
cheers

I wonder how that would work on a sunbaked 74 FRP top? Probably alright eh.

I'm probably going to do just that in the near future. It's supposed to bond well with practically any surface.

Thats sexy. About keeping it clean. You could give it a squirt of armour all or even one of those new bathroom cleaners with teflon in em. I have used armour all on the chassis and hood just before going on a run and it makes for a much easier clean up. I have no idea how it would work out on a hood that is always subject to UV though.

Karl

P.S. Deadmonton. Hee hee, thats funny.
