Here is my having looked at estimated an fixed more cars than I care to think of opinion.
the hood is toast. at least pretty sure. the inner structure on the hood has cruves and ripples on it. if ANY of these are distorted at all replace the hood. it is a HUGE safety issue to try and repair this.

as far as aftermarket parts go good fawking luck getting the holes to line up for the hinges and gettig any of the angles (ie to the fenders level and tight against the grille) I worked for an insurance company for 2 years and have yet to find a decent aftermarket hood supplier for any vehicle. Well if you dont mind that your truck looks like s*** then they are fine.

third point on the aftermarket hood is the safety issue. the oem uses (in most hoods I have seen) thicker steel and more ribs in the bracing in order to jake it stronger but still work in conjuction with the rest of te sheet metal on the front of the truck in the case of a serious accident. not worth skimping a couple hundred bucks on in my opinion.

find a used one or feed the dogs........

There is never enough money to do it right the first time, but always enough to do it twice!

Just to reinforce Phaedrus' and CDan's points - I wouldn't ferk around with an aftermarket hood given that is it a major component of the front-end safety system. Buy a used one or fork out for a new one and be glad it was a 5mph hit and not 60.

The New Car Feature Manual (at least for the Lexus) notes that the hood (and a number of other body parts) are different from other parts of the body - they are 'High Strength Steel' and 'Zinc-Iron Alloy Double Layer Galvannealed Sheet Steel' - see if the AM one can say the same.

No association, except for a I recently forked over for a new OEM hutch - much to my dismay.

Cheers, Hugh

Edit, While I liked the OEM hutch, I ended up returning it for an OEM hatch - much better fit!

A brief footnote about hoods in particular:

Hoods are designed to "fold" in a very specific manner, when in a collision, to prevent them from comming back into the passenger compartment and cutting the occupants in half.

It is a little difficult to see the bracing structure of the 80 series hood as it is covered up by the insulator but there are deliberate "weak points" that cause the hood to fold. This is true of all OEM hoods but the off-shore stuff has not always had that same design built into the copies.

Several years ago there was a very high-profile case involving a Honda that was in a fatal traffic accident after being repaired from a previous collision with an after-market hood.

The fatal accident was a front end hit that sent the hood into the passenger compartment (because it did not fold properly) and it killed the driver by doing guess what.

" Aftermarket hoods ....................... half off ! "

I didn't mean to undercut oem or Dan by any means. Figured I would lood before making the decision. The fender and bumper parts fro my buddies mini fit and looked great, not perfect but you had to look close to tell. Fenders would seem to be a much easier part to produce, while like you said the hood is a much more complex beast. The junk yards around here think thier stuff is gold for landcruisers. Transwest Auto Parts always has some nice looking 60's and 80's. They had a 40 about 4 years ago that had a little body damage but looked like it could be driven off the lot. I offered the guy $800 for the whole truck. they specialize in newer vehicles so the 40 was out of place in the yard. The guy wanted $1000 just for the head off the F motor. $350 for each fender and $500 for the drivers door. Just laughed and walked away. When I bought my 80 I called them on the price of a motor, $4000 with 150k miles. When i lived in Boston there was a Yard in Billerica that always had 4-5 40's, 55's and 60's and I bought the whole front axle for a 78 for $25. Go figure because it's suposed to be cheaper to live in Utah

Brian,
Try calling LKQ in Springville or Spanish Fork. They seemed reasonable on used motors and tranies for 80's. Cleanest yard I have ever seen too. see if you can get a deal on two.

Hi all.
We had a very minor bump that has turned into a big problem. If we didnt have the D@*N pushbar on it there would have been much less damage.
Now for the tech part... Has anyone fixed a hood like this? is it fixable? There is also a bow along the side of the hood, Its not creased. When I lifted the hood it sounded like broken glass running down toward the windshield, Could it have been sound proofing?I will need a new grill also.
I will have to live with the bumper for now, I would like a ARB or the like someday.

I printed up your post to show my wife in hopes that she will let me remove the brush guard on her rig.

Thanks for all the info, I had no idea hood's were so complex, I did know they were made to crumple.
Trent I will give them a call, I was hoping for a used hood.
Liquito and all, I posted it to show what POS's they were, I hope it helped.
Thanks again.

yes, let this be a lesson to all!
anybody who does not buy his sh!t from Dan will be cut in half at the next fender bender!
(and dontcha fergit it!)
