Hey guys, I'm replacing my fj62's rear wheel bearings. Did the passenger side no worrie. When I got to the drivers sideI couldn't get the drum off, so I used those two small screw holes and started woking the drum off. I got it flush with the end of the hub(?), and the threads on the drum let go. not sure of what type of persuasion to use next. On a better note at least 100,000mi. on the bearings being replaced and not a sign of wear. Also I'm no kind of expert but my 3rd members gears look awesome for having 280000 mi. on it.

Make sure the e-brake is fully disengaged. Can you turn the drum? I would get out a big hammer and hit on one side and then 180 from that. I will come off with the hammer. Might be time to replace the drums or get them turned.

It's my parts truck that I'm resurecting, so it has no wheel cylinders in it. E-brake is disengaged and I cannot turn the drum with or without the wheel on. I also kind of figured that those drums were on their last legs and was going to put my other drums on.
The only other thing I can think of is that the shoes are holingf in the wear groove on the drum. man I knew the other side went too easy!

I recommend you drive the drum back into place and clean the flange where the drum centers. Get the flange rim nice and clean to eliminate any interference there. While it's in place, see if you can use a spoon (with a small screwdriver wedged into the adjuster mechanism to free the star wheel) and back off the adjuster.

Hope that puts you in business!

Unfortunately I'm not far enough along in my swap to be able to move it without a tow vehichle. Also I might make better progress with a fresh star in it. Yesterday I was fighting with an inboard in the bilge of a boat before doing my own work. Thanks, will post my reults.

You know, I think the shoes have rusted to the drums. Since you prolly won't reuse the stripped out drum, I say beat the living be-jesus out of the outside of the drum to see if you can knock the shoes clear of the inside.

Beating on it is also good thearapy...

good therapy indeed!
Either that, get the angle grinder out and a cut off wheel and go to town on that BEOTCH!
I HATE the drums!
RDB for me someday!

Chicago

we have a winner

After work yesterday I went back to work with my 3lb hammer, no dice. But Chicago gets it angle grinder across the face of the drum my hammer and a hatchet head for a wedge. Apparently over the time the truck had sat the inner hardware had broken free with everything all jammed up. Even with the it cut in half it was still a fight. After all that the rear wheel bearings are done and diff gears look great for 270,000mi. Thanks guys.
