last night i tried to get my friend in his Jeep Cherokee unstuck from a muddy field he had driven into. He said it wasnt that muddy and i could pull him out when i talked to him on the phone but when i got out there to his car he was stuck up to his axles. I was getting ready to tow him out when i got stuck(no diff lock) as well in a mud filled low spot infront of a hill. It was at night so i couldnt see that well but my front in was at least up to the axles in mud but the back end wasnt too bad. Too make a long story short i had to get towed out in the morning and have cleaned off most of the mud now. .i know little to nothing about off roading What would i need to check or clean or whatever to make sure the car is alright?

it was shaking before i cleaned a lot of the mud off on the wheels (but its better now). I didnt have any breathers of any kind.

I'd appreciate any advice/help

Up to your axles in mud - you shouldn't need to worry about water - in other words, your stock breather location should've been fine.

Based on what you wrote, I think the only thing that might've been damaged is a bit of your pride :)

Make sure you get all the mud off -- that should take care of the shaking/vibration.

Did you put it in low range??? What kind of tires??

BTW this thread is worthless w\o pics!!!!!!!! :flipoff2:
at least of the field if your rig is clean
Welcome

Hello, Welcome to the forum.
Glad things ended up OK.
If it's only mud, you should be just fine. A cruiser laughs at a bit o' mud. Just wash it off. Maybe throw a bit of mud on the sides so the other kids see that you're taking it off-road... :D
Yes, you do have breathers if stock.

And when things calm down, say Hi and introduce yourself, eh!

Bryan - listen to e9999...Eric knows quite a lot about mud...:D
See if he'll share a story or two.

Me? I know pink panties...

yes, that is true, I get stuck a lot in my yard!

And, Doug, we don't want to hear about your personal life, eh!

Bryan,

You will be fine. The shaking was tyre imbalance due to the mud in the tread.

Welcome to the forum and I'm sure you now know why Woody named his web site IH8MUD !

lol thanks guys
sorry about not having any pics..wish i could have taken pictures but i dont have a digital camera

yeah i had tried it in low range too and my tires are..michelin lx i think they are definitely not designed for mud

Don't feel bad.
Everyone on this site has been there or they are on the wrong site.
Things you will get stuck in.
Wet mud, clay, large particle sand on steep beach.
I saw a guy get stuck in a full size RAM 4x4 crew cab trying to pull a dock onto land. 1/2 inche of sand then mud = big truck stuck in back yard. :flipoff2:
Luckily there were trees near by.
Hey, you just need a winch.

Hey I get stuck all the time. Hence my name. It comes with wheelin. Just learn from it and try better next time to negotiate the situation. Oh and if you don't have mud tires or a winch or lockers that stuff would help you out in the future. :D

Bryan,
No worries dude. First week I had a cruiser I got stuck 3 times in snow. :D I had bald street tires and on idea what I was doing. I still have no idea but have better tires now :D.

Seriously…. Truck should be fine. You’ll get the hang of it. The 80 series is a very heavy truck. First thing you need to do is assess the situation using soft focus then hard focus, meaning look all around to see what the deal is then fine tune your focus on specific issues like depth and consistency of mud. Trucks can get stuck in just a little mud or at other times walk right through some deep stuff. So a lot depends on consistency… like is it clay mud etc. Once you do this it will help if you know more about your truck. Things like are your tires decent. Are your tires aired down. If you air down your tires do you have the ability to air back up or is air close by. Does anyone have a strap or winch. Do you have lockers and know how to use them. Do you understand the difference between hi and lo range as well as understanding how to use 2nd start if you have it. So all of the answers to these plus other factors come in to play.

Two things to keep in mind about pride; everybody has it and it’s easily repaired.

No one got hurt and you’ll have more fun next time.

First time off-road with the Cruiser, I got stuck. I thought I could easily handled a section of muddy dirt road with my new "super" rig, sporting FF RR lockers but no winch. But I forgot the weak link - me - the driver.

No sooner than I had entered the zone did the tires became coated with mud and the game was over. Luckily for me, Jeepers were nearby and happily pulled me out.

Yep, we've all been there. I imagine I will be there again, too. :D

truck should be fine. Your ego might not.

I got the call one afternoon to go and pull a felow surveyor/co-worker out of a tobacco field. I didn't have a winch, but i did have a strap. Went out there and another co worker with a 2wd truck was stuck right behind him trying to pull him out (idiot). So, i drove out and was going to pull the truck out, as i started to pull, she started pulling opposite me and i spun up to the axles in like 3 seconds! Pissed! ended up getting a 1952 deuce and a half strap all three vehicles together in a line (insert 3 idiots) and pulled us all out at the same time. Very impressive. But i wasn't impressed with the michellins.

Welcome aboard Bryan. I take it by your name that we share the same birthday :D though mine would have occured a few years prior to yours

Haha you got stuck. I've had the cruiser fora year and haven't gotten it stuck and i've been up to mud to my axles...I have no idea how I haven't gotten stuck but I haven't. You all suck as drivers I rule.

That being said...flame on :flipoff2:

Why didn't you truck rocking it out? going from drive to reverse trying to rock yourself out of it. Might've worked, thats how I've gotten out of being stuck quite a few times in the mud, oh and I'm running BFG Long Trails, a cheaper road tire than the michelins...

i tried that :D
i found some plywood and tried to put that under the back tires (only ones i could get to) but the tires wouldnt grip the wood either and/or weren't on it very well.. if i had a shovel i prolly could have gotten it out but i was freezing as it was..only had on my shorts and short sleve shirt (in sub 40 degree weather) cause i was playing basketball in an indoor court before my friend called to tell me he was stuck

also something strange happened when i was trying to drive out of it going from reverse to drive and low to high.. the locking differential light came on on the dash but i dont have the locker
