Actually Bryan, as far as I know all 80's have a center diff. lock. You just don't have the front and rear lockers. So when you shifted into LO on the transfer case, you were automatically trying to engage the center locker--thats why you saw the light I believe.

If the light was blinking it was trying to engage. If it turns solid, then it is locked.

If that is the case, then you might not have been fully stuck yet, but I guess we won't know now. Unless you want to try again

Oh, this might sound stupid but if u cant lock the front/rear without the front/rear locker what does the center lock do? or is it just trying to engage the center lock? i thought there was only a center differential locker which makes the driveshafts turn at the same speed and that is what the locked cruisers have?

Damn, good call. Sorry ............................so, you should check for free play in your muffler bearings. Those often get moisture/mud in them and need to be repacked.

True true. I changed my bearings and it really took care of some persistant rattles.

pssst throw some clothes in yer truck and maybe a warm sleeping bag so next time you get stuck you won't freeze yer arse off.

The Center diff. lock would give you 50/50 split between to the front axle and the rear axle. So if you were really stuck then you would have 1 wheel in front spinning, and 1 wheel is the rear spinning. If the Center diff. lock wasn't engaged then you may only have 1 of your 4 wheels spinning. Basically 1 wheel drive(center lock not enabled) vs. 2 wheel drive (with the center diff. lock enabled) Now if you also had the front and rear locking diffs. then all the wheels would have tried to get traction rather than just 2(with the center lock enabled).

Does that make sense?

Definitely check that muffler bearing. A little mud can really mess it up
When you have a wheel spinning free try to apply a little brake. It should transfer from power to the other wheels but if your in wet mud and already dug in deep your screwed.

Don't feel bad, I've managed to get 2 out of 3 cruisers stuck on their first outing of any sort.

First one was our 84fj60... loaded up and drove down to Baja with some friends. Down a steep ravine and onto a deserted section of beach where within minutes we were sitting on our axles in the powdersoft sand. She was everafter dubbed "Sandy". Woody chose well with i8mud, but driving on sand is much worse in our heavy rigs, in my opinion.

Note the very important "stop, consume beverage with friends, laugh, then extract" approach that is key to a camping trip, but not so good when freezing and dark out.

When we bought our 73fj40, I was testing out the 4wd in the mud across the street from the dealer.... sky opened up and started POURING rain, within minutes we were in 2 ft of mud instead of 4 inches. Dead stuck. A nice guy came by with a little 2wd pickup and tugged us out in about 30 seconds. But still it was a little humbling. It's all about tires and knowing where not to drive. Mostly the latter.

Heh - you guys have no idea what stuck is. I'll try to find the pictures, but I might not be able to.

I was wheeling my 3500 Diesel 'burban in a dredge pool (they were dredging out a harbor, so all the soft mud was on the bank.) After driving around in it (on BFG ATs) for 30 minutes, I got stuck driving out the other end to go home (always learned, when you're ready to leave go the way you know is good!) Anyways, I wasn't just stuck, I was sinking. Up to the window sills on the passenger side and up to the door handles on the driver's side. After 4 tow trucks, two friends with S/C'd K5s on 44s, an 18-wheeler wrecker was called out and managed to pull me out. He put the jack that lifts the wheels DOWN and then hooked his cable to me and dragged himself until the lift on the back had burried itself so far down that his suspension was now bottomed out, basically turned it into a land anchor. Then he lifted the boom all the way up and pulled straight up to get the suction to break, then easily dragged my HEAVY rig out. It was that day that I understood, no matter how much power and no matter how big the tires were, my 'burb was too damn heavy to wheel. But it'll tow your house!

Sometimes the tire spins on the wheel. Did you air down? If so, that could be the cause...otherwise, you likely have some mud clinging on somewhere.
