Sounds like you have a plan . Where are you located ? Maybe someone will chime in who has local knowledge of the things that could help you out . You should be able to get the axle out if you got the birf out . I once had an issue with an axle I couldn't pull out and had to make an adapter so I could use my slide hammer on the end of an axle . IIRC I used an old broken inner cage from a birf and used some chain to hook it to my puller . I think the groove is big enough to use the split ring from the outside of the hub fuse on the inner axle to hold it on . Does your truck have manual lockouts or electric ones ?
 
I would certainly take a hard look at both of those pieces.
 
I may be willing to part with my BJ74 front axle housing. I'm replacing it with something else soon, but using my knuckles and most all the outers and everything so will pretty much just have the housing leftover sitting around. PM me if you're interested and maybe we can work something out. I got a killer 'Mud brother hookup on what I'm swapping in, so I'd love to return the favor. Mines an '89 and I'm in Salt Lake City area.
