I discovered that my distributor hold down bolt was stripped out this morning. I had noticed a lack of power and terrible gas mileage. Turns out my distributor was loose and retarded :p

Can anyone recommend an easy trick to correct this? I have a helicoil kit but I'm not real excited about pulling all that apart to do it.

If the bold has stripped, pull it out and put in a new one.

If the threads in the block or stripped, I don't see an alternative to pulling it apart and doing a helicoil. The lug on the distributor covers the bolt holw so it has to be taken out to do the repair. Pulling the distributor is no big deal.

I'm pretty sure this is what I gotta do. I put this whole motor together so It's not an issue of can I do it, it's just a matter of it being winter and I don't wanna do it :crybaby: , but on the other hand I'm to cheap to pay someone to do it :o

You might be able to pull the valve cover, pull the distributor and then carefuly retap the hold down's threads in the head. I would throw a rag under the inside end of the hole to catch the alum shavings.

old trick

if the bolt hole is stripped and threads are nearly gone, use a few tooth picks.the tooth picks are made out of wood and it easily fills any crevices in the block this get you by for the mean time the wood could easily be cleaned out later on.hope this helps.:D john

Not a bad idea, it is only the Dist. hold down bolt... You might try tapping a slightly larger hole (Maybe a standard thread...)
