Strange washer found in Transfer Case

Wait, just to clarify...

When you install the slinger, the 3 "tabs" or "projections" face toward the bearing????? Or away from the bearing toward the seal???

Thanks

Away from the bearing, towards the seal. That way, the end of the flange seats down against it. With the tabs facing away from the bearing, I don't know how much oil slinging they actually do. As stated earlier, even the factory service manual does not show this very well.

Thanks for all of this fellas. Got my T-case out today and tranny is down to inspect the clutch I installed. Hopefull get it all back together in the next day or two so I will be messing with the slinger myself.

Scott, hope you got her figured out!

And only the front output shaft has a slinger washer?
I take it the rear one has its own oil flinging mechanism.

Never thought this thread would have legs... Thanks for all the help. Did assembly the other day, had my machine shop remove and press new bearings for me on main output shaft, $ well spent. Everything back together easily but am wondering why the PTO drive gear does not seem to engage anything...did i do something wrong? I don't think so. What purpose does it serve? Someone should write a book with all the little hints, bits of info that other manuals don't tell you when doing rebuilds like this or knuckle rebuild, etc.

One last question, I am pretty sure I have it right. on main output shaft....sequence is spacer, speedo gear then thin washer? the washer placement is my question, I am fairly sure that is right as the wear marks correspond to that order. Then preload and I am done.

The PTO gear is what it is; a PTO drive gear. If you have a PTO box on the side of the case then the gear would drive it. If not, then it's merely a spacer.

You have the order of items on the output correct. The thin washer is a hardened shim and needs to be there.

did you try it without the front driveline in place?

Figured I'd continue hijacking this thread. I replaced the oil slinger, rotated the snap ring, and put a new seal and stake nut on mine.

Ran it with the front driveshaft on and it was still vibrating and making a moderate growling noise when decelerating in 4 Hi at higher speeds.

I pulled the front driveshaft, and it is quiet and smooth in 2 Hi, 4Hi, and 4Lo. I bought new front U-joints and plan on having the front driveshaft balanced to see if that helps.

My question is this:

There is some in and out play in the T-case front output shaft- maybe 1/32-1/16 inch where the shaft and front bearing moves forward before contacting the front snap ring. My old t-case has the play as well.

I thought it would go away when I torqued the front stake nut, but the play is still there. Is this normal? Maybe the cause of my 4Hi growling and vibration problem?

the front outout should have zero play, just like the rear. if the bearing is moving inthe case then there's your problem......

the growling noise you're hearing could be caused by the difference in u-joint angles. same goes for the vibration. if you're running standard joints and the pinion and t-case falge are not parallel, then you're going to get a vibration and noise, usually above 25mph.
if you're running a cv, then the pinion should be pointing at the tcase front output or you could experience the same issues.

That does help.

What is it that tightens the front output up (preventing in and out movement that I'm getting)? Thicker snap ring in front or rear?

The output gear set is the one part I didn't work on myself. I took it to a local drive line shop to remove and replace the 2 bearings on it. The shop owner broke his finger working on it. :whoops: Now I'm wondering if he put it back together correctly.:hhmm:
