A buddy of mine has his 40 in a large outdoor storage lot. He just found out some lowlife went around and pried off the VIN tags of 15-20 different cars and trucks...pretty much anything that was unlocked. What can he do now? He has a title, but nothing to match the VIN to. Unless it is still somewhere on the 40? And I know you can't create new VIN tags....are they all kinda screwed now??

Mine had something on the outside of the frame let me see if i have a pic in my collection it was passenger side on the front behind the bumper basically below the grill behind the tire. I am not saying hat it was a vin number bu it was something........

Ok I still dont know what it was or is but if you look in the black just behind the bumper you can see what i thought was the vin

FJ55's too 'cept my '71 has it on the drivers side.

I don't think that he's screwed. The frame number will match his title and should be all good.If your state needs two locations on the vehicle to verify the VIN number then he may need to get something from the motor vehicle department. If the theft was reported then there shouldn't be much problem doing that.

did he make a police report?? with the report, title and vin # on the frame, should be no problem.

Also look in the engine compartment on the right side fender. Mine has a tag riveted half way down facing the motor.

What good is the VIN tags without the title?

Thanks for all the tips guys, I will pass them on.

I kinda feel sorry for the poor guy who is driving a rig he just bought that has the stolen VIN #'s on it.

Mark A told me a story about a guy who did just that.

maybe just a punk, causing headaches for the working stiffs. maybe he just threw'em away??

They were also mounted on the fire wall in earlier and later years. The plate on the door jam was added in 1969 years before that only had the one in the engine compartment.

there should be one cast onto the engine block as well iirc ..however there is a much smaller chance of that one matching as engines are easy to swap.....just one more place to look though.

"Lost Title Request" is a form at DMV.

here in MT, the last registered owner has to apply for the "lost" title. you cannot make any modifications to it, ie: change of address or name.

I passed on buying 5 1960 vintage FJ 40L's locally. I told my buddy about them and he bought them.

He has a bill of sale for each one and the frame, cowl etc. Some are almost complete rigs, less the VIN tags.

He took the frame numbers and the bill of sale as well as pictures of each rig to the DMV and filled out a lost title form. He has received 3 of the five titles in the mail. The other two seem to be currently registered to "other people". He has the entire vehicles less the vin tags so DMV is taking care of those two. The CHP will come out and inspect each rig and put thier stamp on it.

Just think about how many times that people are trying to sell off just data plates and VIN tags in the classified section:meh:
