On a highschool budget it's sorta hard to get everything I need at once. Would it be ok to run my "stock" (Monroe stock repl. shocks) shock on Slee 4" springs until I can get the appropriate shocks, but just on the street as a DD?

I know it wont ride well, and will have virtually no droop, but if I can do it for a couple of weeks untill I have the dough for the shocks, would I be ok?

I'd either save my money and get the parts I need all at once, or get the parts and hold off installing them until I have all the right pieces. A couple weeks is no big deal.

Stock shocks will not have enough travel. They will be at full extension.

Full ext. all the time? So I can't do this at all? Damn... I know it's not right, but will anything be messed up by doing it?

Don't do it. Be patient and hang on to the parts you have then wait until you have the dough for the parts you need and do it all at once.

You'll run less risk of breaking something, which would cost you more.

Buy the shocks first if you are on a budget. Actually with shipping you might be best just to save.

I'm piecing together my lift, Slee 4" fronts, 863J or 864 rears, Bilstein Shocks, custom drop brackets, local made brake lines, cut and turn, control arm flip. Only thing comming from the same place are the springs.

Ugh...but mommy...

I guess I'll suck it up another week. What, other than poor ride and no flex would happen by doing just springs?

i will be curious to see if 4inch lift will leave enough room to do a control arm flip. The lads from down under say that you need a 6inch lift for that.

you'll max out the shock in the front and it wont be very fun b/c you'd basically be driving with no shocks and just springs, at least that is what it will feel like.

yeah, looking at mine, I don't think there is enough room without seriously spacing down your bumpstops...which is counterproductive at some point.

alkaline, i have considered the arm flip myself but haven't yet. If i start messing with the suspension, that's probably what i'll do considering my next suspension move will be to 6" lift. I also think it would be easier to do the arm flip than a 3 or 4 link modification. May not get as much flex, but with lockers, big tires, good protection i feel that is sufficient. Also with the arm flip you don't have to worry about the drag link hitting the control arms so you can set your castor to what ever you want then weld the brackets on top.

But i also should add that i totally agree with the above statement to wait until you have all the parts and do it right, once.

What is your main reason for doing the front end either flipped control arms or 3 link? Is it for flex? or for other reasons?

Caster correction and better clearance. The few times I have been hung up while wheeling, I was hung on the control arms.

I have an appointment with Carolina Rock Shop (www.carolinarockshop.com) next week, and I guess I will figure out what can be done then.

I really don't get why everyone is telling me to wait though. The shocks, which are what I can imagine would be messed up, will be replaced. The poor ride isn't a problem since a poorly driving 80 is still a well driving vehicle, and the top speed would be around 40mph.

I just really want to go ahead and sit up taller, I'm in highschool, my little ego is roaring.

anyone have a pic of a control arm flip?

Dusty, i have a link saved on my home computer. When i get there this evening i'll try to remember to post back up that link.

It appears to be very simple though.

You're talking about doing $2000+ in suspension mods and can't afford $200 in shocks?

*walks away mumbling something about priorities.

I don't think you'll only risk the shocks. By running them at full extension you will be pounding the shocks, the mounting points, and your wheels will likely be leaving the ground every speed bump you go over. Now for the more interesting part... As your truck corners & leans you will be lifting the inner front wheel. Might look cool, but I don't think it would be overly safe. Suspensions don't only compress and some droop IS needed for daily driving. Probably a lot more than you or I might think.

Just my humble opinion.

The shocks I am looking at are gonna be over $300, most of the parts are going to be custom made (sway drops, rear bump stop drops, rear control arm ext.), and the out the door price is gonna be closer to $1100:D But still, yes, I am having trouble affording $300 in shocks on my highschool budget.

All I have been asking is what would happen/what would be messed up by doing this. And until you, the only answer had been it would be bad for the shocks and ride poorly. I guess I am gonna wait since there could be more than the shocks torn up.

Thanks for the help guys.

Well i say if you really want to do it, go for it and let us know.

I lifted my truck without drop blocks even though everyone said my drive shaft will hit the sway bar, but it didn't. It was close and i eventually got the drop blocks. If i had to do it over again, i would wait until all the parts are there. Just my 2 cents.
