I scored one as a dedicated string trimmer last fall for $150, hardly used. Previously I had an Echo 2100. Turns out this is like comparing a FJ40 (FS90) to a golf cart. There is no comparison. Today was the first real test, knocking down 2.0-3.0' grass. The Echo would do it, but it really didn't like it. The Stihl made the grass it's little bitch and then smacked it on the keister on the way out. Then it asked where the sister was, and hit that, too.

I can't express how happy I am with my FS 90. Thanks for the recommendation, D'Animal!!!

I bought one last year too. I've cut my 1/2 acre pasture a couple times with it when it got too high to cut with the mower. Pretty impressive.

I can't honestly tell the difference between the 90 and 130R, both equally fine machines.

Nice. How timely, I *just* got home from the dealer, bought a brand new FS 90. They were really helpful, fueled it up and let me play with one in their front yard just to make sure I would like it.

I've got a FS80 that i have had for several years and love it. My brother asked a while back if it was any better than a ryobi :rolleyes:
Like bigdn said "It makes tall grass its bitch!"

Bumpin' this back up, I have a question now about mine.

Used it again today, we've been out of town and busy, plus had some rainy days, so the grass is pretty tall now. I couldn't keep the string on the trimmer, it kept snapping off, leaving about a 2" stub of string sticking out of the hub. It would auto-feed another section out when I bump-feed it on the ground, but that would snap off shortly. Got pretty irritating.

Since the grass was so tall, I was running it full throttle pretty much all the time. I still have the string in the hub that came with it, not sure what type it is, has a spiral groove in it. I was wondering of the full-throttle spin was too much force for the string and it was flying off in tension? Is there a better string?

My guess, you've got some old brittle trimmer line..Doesn't take long, but any trimmer line will go south if heat or if let to set a memory on a spool.
Same reason I reload fresh mono on my reels everytime I go fishing.
Buy some of the higher end Stihl stuff, and I'd bet that grass will be screaming for mercy.:D

I suppose it could be old string, I'll swing by the dealer when I can and pick up a spool of new stuff.

I've read that using some lube on it inside the spool does help.
Also heard that keeping it in water will keep it supple longer. (Odd if it's plastic...)

Just cranked up my Ryobi trimmer that had been in storage for 7 years and it ran great for about 10 minutes and then all the gas lines disintegrated. Really thinking about buying an FS90r.

Has anyone here used the edger attachment that you can buy? It looks more substantial than the Stihl Kombi system and I'm only interested in a trimmer and edger. I will run a dedicated, lightweight, blower.

Nevermind. Left the store today with the 90 Kombi motor, straight shaft trimmer and the curved shaft edger....not to mention a BG86 blower and a Honda self-propelled mower.

Whoa. I bet that dealer was happy.
