I've searched around but can't find a collection of information on aftermarket stereo/changer heads that will successfully fit into the FJ62 opening. Anybody know where I can find that...or maybe you can post info, photos, suggestions of your success? Any creative ideas for subwoofer location/placement? Thanks.

I don't have a 62, so ...

isn't it just a double DIN - standard size so any should work. If the mounts are a PITA like the 60 it still fits a std DIN head unit.

I'd look at a double DIN pioneer with bluetooth myself. Couple nice clean looking ones.

Or install a tuffy with the stereo pocket and stick with a single DIN HU.

the double DIN units from just about any toyota will plug right into the harness. i have a Scion single disk in mine, used the FJ62 brackets and a little creative slotting with the dremmel and if my dash hadn't been ripped apart by a thief it would look factory. food for thought and all.

As for subs - tons of room, just depends how much you are willing to sacrifice. How much bass do you want? Some nicer 12" low profile subs sound good and don't take up too much space. If you want serious bump and have the amp to push them some full size 12's in a big box wins over any slim sub... I like the DIYMA audio forums - good guys that aren't total dicks like some of the other audio forums

Placement is all over the map - might be worth chatting with a local stereo shop. If space is tight you might try fiberglassing in an enclosure. Saves space, but typically more $.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think a little research then a local auto stereo shop may be the ticket. I'd like to put a modern head in there that can do sat radio and has an iPod interface. CDs are less important these days, but it'd still be nice to have.

I don't need big thump down too low; just extend it with management down to 40Hz or so. I think a powered sub like the JL Audio PWM110-WJX would be a good choice and fit very nicely aft of the passenger side rear wheel well.

Check the link for my stereo setup in my signature. I put a single DIN kenwood unit in, with a Cobra CB mounted underneath it, and it looks pretty clean.

Thank you. I did find your posts during my searches. Very nice. Don't see a ton of CBs around these days, but for comm while remote wheeling, it makes total sense.

I have a spare factory JBL head from our 2004 Sequoia, but it is considerably wider than the opening. There DIN, 2x DIN, then there's this like the JBL that are wider. I wish it would fit, but I have to find something else.

I installed a single din kenwood. Bought from crutch field scratch and dent. They supplied all the harnesses. This was my third stereo install in my 62. You can get a filler slot to cover the hole.

If you want to go a bit higher end i'd look at this HU:
FH-P8000BT_main_Lrg.jpg

Pioneer PH-P8000BT

I have a couple Pioneer HU's and the new BT and iPod controls on these is pretty slick.

quick and responsive iPod control, BT audio really nice. HD Radio is a bit more (add-on module) but sounds fantastic.

HTH!

I have this unit in my 80 and it rocks ( to me ) had it sincro with my Nexus one and works perfect .. used to have it with my iPhone and nice too ..

Edit: this unit it's big, and barely fits in my 80 ..

for ease of install i don't think you can beat the Scion HU. plug and play with your stock harness.

BUT you won't have BT, or iPod...

some of the scion units have ipod controllers built in if you get the cable, and the ones that can control a CD changer can use an aftermarket plugin dealio that will control an ipod, and give you an aux-in jack that could be used with a satellite rig and i think also pre-outs for a sub

bluetooth.. yeah probably not going to get that i haven't looked into it in a long time

the real bonus of the scion units to me is the distinct lack of interest from thieves. i put the scion unit in mine after someone broke in and tried to take out the blaupunkt (which was ancient anyway).

if you want to add the aftermarket ipod control thing, money is probably a wash with a full aftermarket HU tho

good info. You've got a definite point about thieve's interest with that shiny Pioneer HU. No detachable face... I'd make sure you have a visible alarm if you are in an area with prowlers.

As for being able to add iPod controls. Ability and usability are two different things. I looked at a bunch of HU's trying to find one that had BT (commute), iPod control, and HD Radio.
Just having the iPod control doesn't mean it's usable. I demo'd some HU's at a local stereo shop and even though they did control the iPod it was SLOW AS HELL. Basically unusable for me. It worked, and might be OK for a passenger, but not for me. Kenwood was painful, Alpine a bit better, Pioneer was the best of the group i looked at.

That's a tough one to test out with the Scion HU unless you have a friend w/ that setup already. And it would be great if it were snappy and responsive - especially at that price and low theft magnet. BT can always be taken care of with an ear piece or the visor speaker units - though not nearly as nice sound quality - especially over loud offroad tires.

HTH!

good points about useability. i'm an ipod idiot, barely use mine i really just want an aux in for the satellite rig that moves between cars

i was wrong about the pre-amp outs, at least for the one i remember researching

seems to work for most toyotas
USA SPEC: iPod to Vehicle Interfaces

some of the higher end Scion units are actually Pioneers in disguise (they say pioneer on the front as well as scion), have pre-outs, in-dash changers... and i assume those are the ones that can do "native" ipod control with the cable, as opposed to the above add on module. the higher end Scion units do start looking much prettier and aren't all that cheap to begin with.

another feature they have is usb drive access. listing similar to an iPod - with folder structure and character length depending on the HU. Plug in a usb drive (solid state thumb drive, possibly even some large enclosed 2.5"
USB HDD's) and browse through the folders for your music. Some HU's will limit you to so many folders deep, or a maximum length of file name. I swap between my 60GB iPod and a small 8GB usb thumbdrive.

I am curious which Scion HU you installed in our fj62. I just bought a t1806, but the face is meaningfull wider than the dash opening. both the power and CD eject button sit partially behind the dash panel. It seems like you would have to make significant mods to the face plate and the dash opening to get this thing to fit at all, and I am not sure it would look right. Maybe I am just too picky. would love some feedback from someone who made installed this unit.
