The spare tire carrier on my 60 seems to be stuck. There has never been a tire on it since I've owned it, I've always just carried the tire in the back. But it kind of gets in the way and I'd like to be able to mount it underneath in the intended location.

When you try to turn it, you can turn it slightly and the chain will move upwards, but when you turn it the other way it won't move down. I've tried WD40ing it, but I didn't know if there was some trick to getting it to lower. Any suggestions?

They rust badly, a very common problem. I've found one method to resurrect those rusty winches is to insert your crank, get a BFH, and beat the heck out of the end of the handle, knock it all loose and get things moving again. WD40 won't do a thing to rust, you need something like PB Blaster or better yet Kroil.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to get a new winch from the dealer, or maybe a used one from the Wanted section on this site.

I recently went through this with mine. It was frozen solid..incrediblely so. I would advise you to take the entire cross member off (4 bolts) and get it out where you can work on it. I had to take the chain guide off by grinding off the rivets. Once you get it apart, you can clean it up. For lube, I used anti seize. Now it works fine. Don't know how long that will last but just a thought. I used Rust bullet on the non friction surfaces including the cross member.

I went one step further than PB Blaster, I bought some zip ties and tied it up, then went to 2BadFJs and bought a new rear bumper and tire carrier :p Heck, I even got a gas can holder out of the deal!

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your system. Ih8rust

I had one frozen up good. I marinated it in WD-40 and then used a wrech on the end of the shaft that turns that mechanisim. I couldn't believe the force required to get it going, but it did finally give in, and after several complete up and down sessions with more WD-40 it worked ok. It's still in use today.

Alright... sounds like all it needs is a liberal application of lubricant and force. :hhmm:

Thanks everyone... just wanted to make sure it didn't involve some sort of "Twist left 6 times, right 5, left twice more, change the power steering fluid, remove the front passenger seat, suspend a startled Mongoose from the third link of the chain only, and only after all of this has been done will the spare tire carrier descend."

Kroil is the best way to get things loose. Once you've gotten the initial grunt of getting the thing to move, just give it a quick squirt with Kroil every couple of months to keep it in good working order. I usually lower and reinstall the spare once a year to keep the winch lubricated and check everything up above the wheel & tire.
