So steering wheels, what models interchange, what diameter are they. Search brought up very little and FAQ has nothing that I found. I would like to stay Toyota on my 71..but after swapping out the seats and adding an Overlandwerks seat mounting system factory wheel resides about an inch from my thighs. Going smaller will be fine due to power steering system being installed. Thanks in advance for any productive and informative comments.

you should find all Toyota stuff is the same spline I put a 2000 ish corolla steering wheel on my 40, the horn contacts needed slight bending to get the horn to work, the indicator stalk no longer returns to centre after coming out of a corner but I can live with that

What is the diameter of the steering wheel, and no issues with the airbag or did you remove it? Pics?

I'm running an '80 series Cruiser wheel , love it . Will get dimensions later today ....

I see a ton of these on Ebay. Right now their is a 1981 FJ40 steering wheel for $450 ..I just scratch my head :hmm:

The later wheels are relatively easy to make work on the ~'73 and newer column, on the early column, the horn and signal are backwards in comparison to the later wheel, so would take a bit of a trick to make all of it work. If a later wheel is in the plan we also switch to the later column.

How comfortable are you sitting in the driver's seat? For me (tall) that type of seat bracket, has me looking at the sun visor, way too high, also the seat bottom is flatter than I prefer. The problem with that design is the gas tank, the passenger seat has to be high and flat, with the straight tubes all of the way across, those setting are needlessly transferred to the driver's side. I would modify the driver's side of the bracket to lower and tip slightly tip back the driver side, like how it's done in the later bucket seat rigs.

The 80 series wheel is 15.373" in diameter , just about right in my opinion . Forgot about the early style steering column , maybe upgrade to the later model but I think that also involves changes in turn signal/hazard wiring ...

What year was the 80 you pulled the wheel out of?

How much work is required to uninstall an 80 series and reinstall in a 40 u have a 78 and am considering doing the same process

Yep, the horn ring contact has a slightly different radius, we just loosened the screw on the wiper contact and moved it over. The early wheel has two turn signal cancel pins, the later only one, so drilled an 1/8" hole in the proper location and added a roll pin.

IIRC, this one is out of a '91, some, more common in the '93-94ish are leather wrapped and likely in bad condition, nearing end of life, the plain wheels hold up better. All of the wheels from the '90ish area fit, some are nice, but most like the Camry are brazened with the model name, some of the more basic cars (like the Paseo, etc) have plain wheels that just have Toyota on them and look/work nice..

I am 6'1" . I will have to see where my eyes naturally look while sitting. I was mainly focused on the damn steering wheel in my crotch. I did consider moving the fuel tank to the rear and cutting an inch off the bottom of the bracket to get the clearance I needed, but a steering wheel change seems cheaper.

This is exactly what I am looking for.

The early wheel has two turn signal cancel pins . . .

how early ? my '72 steering wheel has only one canceling pin - and when all moons are ideally aligned, it will actually work to cancel out both sides (most of the time, only one ) - the adjustment of the position of the turn signal switch on the column with regard to both height and rotary direction has to be perfect

Yep,, was talking early as in '73-83, vs later '90ish. I don't see an easy way to make the '90ish wheel work all of the functions on a '72 and older column. On the '72 and older, the cancel pin is on the outer ring, the horn is on the inner, the spring is on the wheel. On the '73 and newer, the cancel pin(s) are on the inside, the horn outside and the spring contact is on the turn signal switch, column side. Could likely be made to work, but would take some tricks, likely easier to switch to the '73+ column.

SOR has Grant steering wheels with the modification kit for 1969 and newer. I have a 1968 so I'm out of luck but I'll be switching out my steering for a F60 power steering column at a later date.

That is my very last option. I want to stay Toyota. What I am hoping for is a listing of steering wheels by year/model/size.

Right now I know...

1976 FJ40 wheel is 17 inches
1991 FJ80 wheel is 15 3/8 ish

I wonder if one of the Grant steering wheel mods will work with an early 90's Toyota steering wheel?

The adapters work OK (I guess) if you want an aftermarket wheel. Most aftermarket wheels mount with 3 bolts, so don't see how the adapter would be useful for mounting a factory wheel? I haven't been impressed with the quality of the aftermarket adapters that I have seen, have taken a few off and tossed them.
