Consensus is the r/h CV joint is on the way out.

Today dismantled the front r/h CV joint. Full of water.

Not sure if this is the source of the wobbles, but its another problem being solved.

Water contamination has got nothing to do with the steering wobbling.
Steering wobble is common issue with LJ SWB series.:bang:

Sent from my iPad using IH8MUD... fun starts where the road ends

This shows that you didn't take your initiative to check up the oil/water contamination after water crossing.:)

Well its up at 4am and back at night time in the dark so yes this does get overlooked.

What would be the best way to check?

Problem solved.

The sway bar bushes were gone. I really don't know when these were last replaced. Anyway, no more wobbles for now.

So after reading this thread, what is the concensus for the proper Alignment Specs on an stock LJ70?
Toe, Caster, Camber?

Heres what I found. Covers all 70, 73 and 75 series

They're screen shots so there's a bit of overlap

Great thread....I just bought a Rj70 here in El Salvador last week. Drove her for a few days with no issues, then while taking a load of people to the movies the other nite while doing around 100kmh on the highway I experienced the death wobble...I thought the wheels were coming off. Pulled over and checked the lugs ...all good. I think the speed and uneven road lumps from all the earthquakes here caused the cruiser to feel that way. Mine is stock height and drove the rest of the night just fine....but it was quite scary at first. I have a OME lift coming in Dec. I am going to order castor bushings now and steering stabilizer ...and check the sway bar bushings. I would hate to make the problem worse....I have had her up to 120kmh no problem prior...but now I am hesitant until I inspect and replace all worn parts.

I will post any found issues.
Thanks

Dom,
I am no expert and new to the LJ70 world. I lived in Panama for 8 years and am familiar with the roads in Latin America. I drove a Defender 90 down there. As far as Death Wobble goes, my first suspect would always be the quality of tires/ wear/ balance. Please post your results of the OME lift. it is only 40mm in the front and 50mm in the rear, but am curious of the results. Not sure If I want to lift mine, but the front springs on mine seem pretty beat and seem to dive quite a bit more than they should. Regards, Don

They ordered me the stiff springs for the front and medium for the rear. I plan on having bumpers fabricated and a winch installed.
My tires are new and so are the wheels . The balance feels perfect...no vibrations at speed and alignment is perfect. But since the suspension is not independent , I imagine all it takes is some uneven offset bumps to get her pitching and rolling at speed .
I will keep you informed .

I would post some pics of her but the site won't allow me yet?
Regards,
Dom

Dom, I didn't know OME offered different springs for the LJ/RJs.
The ones I were considering were front (OME 2870) provide 40mm of lift.
And the rears are (OME 2871) and provide 50mm of lift.
Please let me know how it works out. I will go with stiffer as well, if you know the part number.

Also, just for piece of mind, go drive that same section of road where
you got the death wobble with all your friends inside, and do it with just you in the car.
I could just be a bad section of raod.

I live in Vegas now, and one section of the interstate give the LJ70 death wobble, but also my BMW, and Bronco.
Maybe just the frequency of the bumps in the road. (I call that SWAG - some wild ass guesss).

I'll have wife find the receipt with all the part numbers when she gets home later. I do plan on taking the same route to try and duplicate the issue . I'll keep ya posted.

2876 are the heavy fronts and 2871 are the rear mediums.

We took her for a weekend run up to 9000' and made it. Forded a couple rivers and climbed some serious inclines. The carb did. It like the inclines or altitude....stalled a couple times on me. I did have the death wobble once for a couple seconds when we first left San Salvador on the pan American highway...then never again the rest of the weekend. All my bushings look good and shock mounts. The one thing that makes me suspicious is the steering dampener . My steering wheel was back and fourth while climbing this weekend withiut resistance .
My kit won't be here till Dec 20 or so...let you know then.
Regards
