Parts guy Shawn down where Cdan used to work, did a great job getting me hooked up with parts. One thing I always liked about Dan (and was willing to spend shipping on) was that I always got the right parts and I didn't have to know everything, unlike at my local dealer.

The techie part: I had some play in my steering shaft and i thought it was the u joints near the fire wall (@beno hooked me up with the right part a year or two ago). Anyway, once I got everything apart I couldn't find play in the joint - it's just really loose and sloppy but no visible movement. The play seemed to be coming from the bearing area that sits right at the firewall behind he retaining clip. It rocks back and forth ever so slightly.

Any one else have experience with this, is it expected? The parts in the picture are replacement parts that I'm putting in just because I want new stuff in the cruiser while I can still get parts and hopefully putting new ujoints and bearing/cap will tighten it up a lil bit.

Also looking for feedback on the slip joint. Is there one on the 60 series? It looks like the two parts of the shaft slip together and are pinned or something. Should I do anything it that area?

Got farther into this yesterday, so I'll answer my own questions and post a few more pictures. The bearing is a slip fit with circlips holding it in place, so I think it'll rock somewhat inherently. There is a clam shell (white) that fits over the bearing and an obsolete oring goes between the two parts. My oring is flattened so I'm going to soak it in brake fluid for a couple days to get it to swell. The "slip joint" is locked right to its mating part with pins. It doesn't move at all. This is different than what I had read on older cruisers, since mine is a late 85, maybe I have the new and improved design. After I got the bearing off, I could feel slight play in he ujoint and the plastic cover was breaking apart so I feel good about making the decision to replace them.
