When I replaced mine it was with aftermarket and kept the OEM. I’m interested in rebuilding the OEM. Has anyone successfully done this? Is it even worth it?

Can't recall seeing anyone do this in mud.

I've been looking for one to rebuild, just to see what it takes. Seals and valves alone run about $150 to my door. Then if rack ends needed, it's about $220 for the pair. Then $50 for mounting bushings and $45 for boots. If pinion & rack gears worn I don't think they are available, or if, price will be prohibitive.

So as you can see cost gets up there and then you've labor/time.

Thank You so much for the details.. found a better toyota certified shop to do the job and for 200-300 less. Will get everything checked including the bushings.

So like $250 ish. Not bad....
The rack has been sitting around forever. Add another item on to do list. ;)

@2001LC Once I add the AT-205, do I have to drive it for 5 hours or more?

I did this to my LR3 years ago(AT-205). I definitely didn't drive for 5 hours straight but I did drive it all weekend. Worked out great in no time. Nothing to lose right? Leaking anyway. Good luck

5 hours drive time is what they recommend, can be in one day or over weeks.

I just had a rack & pinion input shaft seal stop leaking in under three hour. Same rigs front differential rear seal took all of 5 hours and then some. This was on a 2000 with 350K miles on the clock.

Another 2000 w/270K had a front differential side seal stop leaking two hours after adding AT-205. Only to start leaking again a few days later. Pulled front drive shaft and found diff side seal had been knocked in at angle, and driven that way for 30K miles or more. That seal was damaged, so AT-205 could not help.

@Beanzermin I went to Samurai Motors.. Yoshi gave me a good price on replacing it as well as get other fixed.

Do you guys with the leaks have play in the movement of the steering rod also?

Mine has been leaking for the past 12k miles, but zero play on the steering. It drives straight, feels solid.

sorry, should have said "tie rod" instead (driver's side)

@2001LC.. Thank you for the detailed info. Unfortunately I am not very mechanically savy... How would I go about checking the leak?

I had a local shop check the rig as I just bought it and they said everything was solid besides the steering rack and the valve gasket. Advsied me that It would cost about $1200 for the rack and another $450 for the gasket.
As mentioned before, snug down the valve cover bolts and that may be all that's needed to solve that leak. 10 or 12mm socket on a long extension is all that's required.

I have a leak that looks like it is coming from the input shaft. I'm going to pick up a bottle of the AT-205 reseal and see if it stops the leak. 5 hours of driving correct?

If this works I'm sending @2001LC a nice bottle of bourbon.

I sacked up and went to the dealership about a year ago... $2300 out the door :(

Correct 5 hours drive time, over time or all in one drive. Use 1.3 oz. Clean area after the five hours and then watch.

I have been leaking for a few days. Should I also top off on power steering fluid?

Any recommendations on what kind, if so?

Mine has been leaking for the past 4 years and still drives straight. I just keep checking the reservoir and add more steering fluid but planning to get it replaced soon. Dealer quoted $1000 parts and labor. The only problem is the rack is on back order and they are not sure when it will be delivered to the dealer.
