Is there any way to adjust the steering box, I seem to have to much play and have problems keeping the Cruiser tracking straight down the road, kind of like herding kittens. Before everyone jumps in the entire front axel except the third member has been completely rebuilt….knuckles, wheel bearings and knuckle bearings, tie rod ends, tie rod, rag joint, center arm, and drag link. Do I just need a new steering box or can it be adjusted/rebuilt? This is for a 10/74 FJ40 w/o power steering.

This issue is something I've been trying to address with my 10/74 as well. I was planning on pulling the steering box out and seeing if there wasn't something to be done with it. I'm as interested in the answer as you are!

They are adjustable.

So is the bell crank. The box under your frame.

Get them too tight and they will lock up on you when hot.

The gears wear in one spot. the spot happens to be when you are going straight sine you are going traight most of the time. If you adjust the gears so it is snug when straight, when you turn the gears will be too tight.

Yes, you can adjust your steering box to decrease the play. You can even rebuild your steering box. But, maybe before I did that, I'd re-adjust the front wheel bearings and the center arm...they often need a re-torquing after being run for a bit after replacement. And re-check your toe-in, maybe increase it an 1/8th". What size tires?
The instructions for the steering box adjustment are, I think, in the factory chassis manual.

I will recheck the wheels and center arm...the truck has over 300K mil so I figured since the front was all new that the steering box is worn.

Who sells steering box rebuild kits?

Kragen should have it in stock...
(Not really. But maybe if you wait patiently one of the usual suspects will post the part number, and you can call C. Dan in the morning)
