Steering Box and Transfer Case

New guy to the forum...quick history. Moved to Colorado last year and shipped out a 1988 FJ62 that was sitting in the back yard. Turned out to be a great decision as it is a great Rocky Mountain machine...once you learn to live with the gutless stock motor. 40K on a factory Toyota long block, rest of the drivetrain has 273K. No real problems, but it is now our daily driver and needs some attention. It appears the steering box is the only loose steering component, and I'm seeing some wear on my new Toyo AT's. Need to address that soon. Also, the main driveline lash appears to be in the transfer case...any ideas on rebuild kits or replacements. This is a great, really clean FJ62 and it looks like we'll be keeping it for our son to drive in a few years. I've restored several cars in the past, but no Land Cruisers. Any help would be REALLY appreciated, and I'm looking forward to getting into the FJ family.

Your drive train lash is likely at the transmission output shaft which wears out the splines over time. Do a search on McNamara gear and get more info than you want.

The steering box may be the source of the steering slop, but it is way more likely to be the spring loaded drag link ends which suck totally and are a silly design by Toyota.

Cruiserdrew is right on the money. Mcnamara gears are not cheap but way cheaper than the tranny. The 62 tcase I just rebuilt to use on my diesel had the same problem. Worn splines on the output shaft as well as the main output gear.

My main wheeling partner just rebuilt his drag link ends and the steering tiightened right up. Sourced the parts from Specter Off Road.

you guys are great...makes me want to start a frame-up restoration! I'll be looking into the input shaft issue and drag links...while I try to determine what makes the gauges flip out all the time...bad ground? All gauges go all over the place at random times. Doesn't worry me too much, but my wife doesn't know the sound of an engine getting too hot, or if it REALLY has no oil pressure...etc. :) Sorry to drag everyone into this, but this truck's a keeper.
