Hello and greetings from Guam,
I just purchased My first FJ62 about three weeks ago. It is a 1990 with 94,000 miles, 4" OME lift, and 31" tires. A little history on the problem, a couple days after I bought it my wife and I were taking it out, drove to several places without a problem, then went to the mall. When we came back out went to start up the cruiser and nothing, no starter, no lights, acted like a completely dead battery. So I grabbed some cables and got a jump, she fired right up. Took the battery to napa to have it load tested and it tested fine. Since then she has started up on the first crank without a problem until the other day. I was out with my son running erands (starting and stopping the truck several times) and pulled in to get gas. When I went to start it up the same thing happened again. Grabbed the jumper cables and went to jump it off but it would not fire. I could hear the starter solenoid clicking but the engine would not turn over. Got her towed home and started investigating. At least now the problem is constant so I can troubleshoot it and what I have so far is when I turn the ignition switch to the first position all of my indicator lights, interior lights and auxilary devices come on. as soon as I turn the key to start I hear a click on the passenger side and all power is lost. I can pull the battery cables, wait a couple of seconds, and reconnect and all of my power is restored but it will do the same thing if I try and start it again. I took the starter off and had it bench tested and it tested fine. By the way the power is staying off until I remove the battery cables it makes me think there might be a short somwhere causing a relay to switch and stay in that position until power is removed and it can change state. I am going to check out the start relay tomorrow but I just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone has had a similar problem and would know of a quick fix. Thanks for your time.
Nate

Howdy! I would replace both battery cables and be done with it. Good chance one of them is corroded on the inside where you cannot see it. Moisture creeps in from the ends of the cables and migrates to the lowest spot. I have seen them look like green cottage cheese after pulling off the rubber insulation. Easy and Cheap fix. John

Well, I replaced the start solenoid to no avail, nothing changed. So now I will check my battery cables and all my ground connections. I just don't understand why the power will trip offline when I try to start it, but no fuses are blown. Does the main circuit breaker reset when you pull the battery cables? I don't have much to work with using a haynes manual, I need a factory service manual but being on the island its pretty hard to find one.

I am not too knowledgeable on the prob. Was lookin at your post cause sumtimes mine starts on the 3rd crank and sumtimes on the 1st. I have a 1990 as well and I would be happy to PDF and post the suggested necessary FSM pages to help you. I just need you or someone to say what section to post for you.

Well I have discovered something new, the power trips offline as soon as the main relay ( part # 85915-60010) closes. Bullprick, thanks for jumping in, I could really use the OHM reading for the main relay, I would imagine it is given in the FSM. Once I know that I can take it out of the equation and search on down the line. Also where did you get the FSM from?
Thanks,
Nate

you can download the body a chassis manual from this site. It's a big file but worth it if you can't find a paper manual. It's the "Land Cruiser Chassis & Body Manual - PN: 36262E" manual on page 3 of the "Toyota Workshop and Repair Manual" section. This manual will have wiring diagrams and some electrical trouble shooting guidelines, but will not cover starter issues (this is part of the "engine" manual).

Downloads - Page: 1

This post has a link to a website where you can find toyota manual publication numbers. It also has a telephone number to call where you can order the manuals to be sent to you (not sure if they'll send to Guam, though).

For the early 60 series, toyota offered several different manuals (engine, chassis, emissions, etc.) because of the different variations of the vehicle offered in different markets. I get the impression that with the 62 series, they started consolidating into one manual. However, there is some crossover. Also, you need to purchase a manual based on your vehicle's build date, not model year. I think that 1990 was also a cross over year between the 62 and 80 series. Hopefully someone will post up with the correct publication number for the manual(s) you need. Or you can try searching...

according to this post (https://forum.ih8mud.com/835133-post9.html) you can also subscribe to a toyota-sponsored manual download service for one day, to get the 3Fe engine manual.

I located the wiring diagram for the chassis electrical system in the Haynes book. I can post the whole thing for you or email you a PDF. The PO I bought my rig from was awsome to include both books. I am new to this stuff and this rig is my 1st project ever so I need specific parts or sections from you to look up so I can then post them for you.

2mbb, Thanks a million brother! I had stumbled upon that website before but couldn't find it to save my life, lots of good information.
Bullprick, that would be awesome if you could scan some images for me. If it's not too much of a hassle I could use the starting system from the factory service manual, also any info. on the open circuit relay and the main relay ( located on the pasenger side under the hood), coil resistance specifically. Thanks again for your help guy's.
Nate

If you are speaking of the pick-up coil's resistance...the book tells me 88-91 models are:
G to G- terminals.....140 to 180 ohms
NE to G- terminals.....140 to 180 ohms

She is back up and running! went through and cleaned and recrimped all major cable connections under hood (positive and neg) including battery post clamps, and gave it a go........she started right up. I should have remembered that age old acronym K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). I got so fixated on the fact that I could be facing a bunch of money in repairs that I got all wrapped around the axles and didn't start where I should have:doh:. Thanks again to all the guys who jumped in on this thread, I apologize for any of your wasted time, next time your in Guam I'll buy you a beer:cheers:. It's nice to know that there is help out there when you need it.......Got Mudd?:steer:
