Just venting....I have a feeling I'll have all 8 coils replaced by year's end.

#1 and #3 failed 300 miles apart in November, 2011.

#6 failed in Dec 2011.

#7 failed 1/25/12.

#2 failed in March.

All this within a span of 4k miles.

Yes, once the first one fails it stands to reason that the rest are close to the end of their service life. That said, I've replaced five over several years. Now I just keep one on the shelf in readiness for the next one to drop.
Makes sense to replace the rest in one shot, but its also interesting to see how long the hold-outs actually last.

I'm new to the 100s but usually when a coil pack goes out, the rest are right behind it. I've found it common practice to replace all of the coil packs at one time... Maybe you should do the rest on this next replacement.

My 100 just hit 180K miles this past weekend... I know I have replaced 2 coil packs... possibly 3... but they've all been far apart as far as mileage goes... I guess you could justify replacing them all as preventive maintenance but seems unnecessary to me...

I'm running a 99, w/ 153K miles. I've replaced several. The one twist is that the same one(s) keep going out. My mechanic has been able to get them replaced under warranty each time through his part shop. :) It has probably happen 10+/- times over the past two years. The last time we replaced one with the Toyota version. Obviously more expensive, but hopefully it will stop failing. Hopefully I won't have to do it too many more times, but we shall see.

I just had #4 bail on me this past Sunday @ just over 150k miles - will probably replace all of them and keep the old ones as emergency spares.

I had two go out in a month on my 99 at 175 k- replaced all 8 with denso, approx $70 a piece. No more issues in the past 15 months. Hassle factor of replacing one at a time wasn't worth it to me.

I'm on all of my originals. (Crap I shouldn't say that...) My current thinking is I'll replace them all at 250k as a PM.

(Now I'll certainly have my first failure within 100 miles... :hillbilly: )

I carry a spare, code reader and small ratchet set. Plus several pairs latex gloves. Takes 10 minutes or less to replace one. Little more if you have plastic cover.

My brother has had to replace at least 4 in the last 10,000 miles in his 2000 LX. I think one went twice, however I doubt the last 2 were factory oem (which I think is the problem).

I've owned mine from 147k miles, I now have 189k miles. I've only had to replace 1 so far, and I did that with factory oem (denso). I'm anticipating having to replace another soon.

I've had my truck from 138k to now at 180k and haven't had to replace one yet... no idea if they are all original. Probably time to buy a spare and code reader... knock on wood.

^^ This!
Just had a coil pack replaced.... Now trying to decide if I should do the others myself. How difficult is the replacement?

Truck has 193k on it.

Easy, peasy...

Very easy.

I wouldn't replace them as a maintenance item. That would be a pretty large chunk of money to replace them when they're still working. If you're worried about them going out, buy a spare and keep it in the truck.

If you haven't done spark plugs recently it might not be a bad idea to replace those (I think the OEM iridium pugs were supposed to be good for 100k, so you're just about due if they replaced on time before). Old plugs can be harder on the coils and make them die more quickly. It will also show you exactly how easy it is to replace the coils because you'll have to pull them out to put in the new plugs.

This is why when one goes, I'm going to do them all.

Sure if you have plenty of extra money to burn... I've had to replace 2 over the last 5 years and I have 186K on the OD now... Maybe I'm just lucky but replacing them all if one goes out seems un-necessary to me... I'd replace what you need and put the other money towards mods of your choice...

Anyone have a suggestion on where's the least expensive place to buy Denso-brand coil packs? Also, what about code readers? I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow, and though I thought about buying a couple of spare coil packs and a code reader a month or so ago, I forgot to get that taken care of until I just read this thread.

Any suggestions for someone in a hurry and no time to mail order?

Your best bet is probably to just call around and see what the local parts stores and dealership have. When I was looking, the dealership was the only place in town that had Denso coil packs in stock. They were a day or two out for the others. Maybe you can get a price from Cdan and get one of them to match it? Would be worth a try.

I just noticed that your sig says you have two 100s. If one of them won't be used while you're on the road, you could pull one or two of the packs from it. Order your spares and then reinstall when you're at home again.
